Officer Response Time: Why It’s Important To Be Able To Protect Yourself

I live in a rural county. I love the countryside and the miles of rolling hills dotted with cattle and horses. My nearest neighbor lives a quarter of a mile away. Having grown up in NYC, I see it as a wonderful and almost mystical place that I read about in books.

I also work here as a law enforcement officer. With a county population of 9500, you get to know people very quickly, at least the ones who give you the most trouble. The downside is potential police response time. Due to the size of the county and its topography, it can easily be 40 minutes before we get to a call.

It doesn’t seem like a big deal until you have an emergency. A lot of bad things can happen in 40 minutes.

This scenario is growing more and more common across the country. Here are the average police response times in some key areas across the country:

• Detroit Police Department: Response to 911 call – 24 minutes. Non-priority calls: 52 minutes.
• New York: Priority 911 call response time – over 8 minutes.
• LAPD: 5.7 minutes
• Minneapolis: Average response time for highest-priority calls is 8 minutes and 13 seconds.
• Atlanta: 11 minutes and 12 seconds response time for a high-priority 911 call
• El Paso (Texas) PD: 11 minutes 11 seconds.
• Denver PD: 11 minutes flat.
• Tucson, Ariz.: 10 minutes and 11 seconds.
• Kansas City, Mo., and Oklahoma City: Less than 10 minutes

This data is based on the larger urban environment. Data on rural response times is much harder to find, but from my personal experience, it’s much longer than that. The Justice Department said the optimal response time is about 4 minutes and can stretch to 1 hour or more in some rural communities.

What does all this mean to you? It depends on where you live. If you live in a highly urban area with a large police force, your concern is minimal, as the response time will likely be 2 minutes. If, like many parts of the country, you live in a rural or even a poor urban area like Detroit, a police response time of more than 30 minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

Just think about active shooter situations. According to the FBI, the average active-shooter incident lasts 12 minutes. Thirty-seven percent lasted less than 5 minutes. Too many deaths in less time than most police departments can respond to.

The truth is, law enforcement officers are the first responders. We respond after Bad things have happened or are happening. That’s why it’s important to be able to protect yourself and your loved ones. You can use lethal self-defense weapons, but you should also be armed with non-lethal options.

Cheap and reliable stun guns are available. Pepper spray is another choice for non-lethal self-defense. Law enforcement officers routinely carry these two options as well as their firearms. Why shouldn’t you? Do not rely on the police as your only means of protection. They may not get there in time to save you. Be prepared to defend yourself.
