A 3rd Time To Die by George A Bernstein – Book Review

What is it about your stranger?

It is a love story rooted in a mystery, a paranormal mystery. Why can Ashley Easton speak French so well? Why can he ride such a good horse after just a few weeks of riding? The mysterious young man she meets at the dressage competition and why is he so attractive? A 3rd Time to Die George A. Bernstein is a love story and a mystery, rolled into one It uses the idea of reincarnation as an interesting plot device.

Our first glimpse of Ashley Easton rescuing a woman’s horse:

“Hey give it up!” His scream raspy, he slammed the gate with the side of a pitchfork. (Bernstein, p. 25)

Horses have always represented emotion and desire in literature, and A 3rd Time to Die is no exception. Ashley’s new horse brings her excitement and energy into her life and allows a new relationship to develop. Ashley rescues the horse and is revived and energized; It brings into sharp relief the way his life has changed. Ashley is an engaging character who knows her own mind and who is financially independent. She feels a lot, but takes a long time to act on those feelings: that’s Ashley Easton’s challenge. The reader sometimes feels a sense of despair, and is glad that he finally lets himself go.

Ashley’s lover, Craig Thornton, is handsome and everything Ashley wants and needs: he is the polar opposite of Ashley’s husband Keith, and he is charming, attractive, fascinated by Ashley, shares her interests, and cares. As their relationship changes over time, and as they learn more about each other, their characters develop in surprising and interesting ways. A personal flaw or two, however, might help make Craig more real.

Craig Thornton is also an interesting contrast to Ashley as his marriage is falling apart, but it’s not his fault: his wife is the one who’s cheating. Bernstein thus establishes interesting parallels and contrasts between relationships. The two spouses, Keith and Tony, are not happy characters. Keith is a husband completely out of touch: he ignores the children and takes a mistress. I would have liked a little more shading for these husbands to add more real personality complexity: Keith doesn’t help with the kids, doesn’t like anything else about his wife, is bad in his other relationships; But there is no redeeming quality. As a person, he is a bit more evil. He seems to have no saving grace: I know Craig is nice but Keith must be right at one point.

The novel examines relationships. between men and women A 3rd Time to Die Not just looking for someone special. A past-life visionary flashback to early 1895 sees Charles in Victoria, a woman who is “passionate, sensitive, and willful” (Bernstein, p. 6). She loves him for these qualities, and Ashley and Craig alike are looking for very special qualities.

Soul mates are important in this novel – people click and realize they are meant to be together. The Australian Psychological Society’s website states that: “New fields of psychology, particularly transpersonal psychology and ecopsychology, are taking seriously people’s holistic conceptions of mind, body and spirit. These fields propose that humans are spiritual beings. Human lives extend beyond our mundane existence and the environment and A skin-encased ego-self to include direct experience of the cosmos.(Australian Psychology Society website. Transpersonal Psychology) soul mates and the complexities of reincarnation that must be overcome make for a really interesting plot device in this novel. The question of whether Ashley and Craig will survive their love and who is against them and wants to harm them is an interesting question.

The last main character is the psychologist Dr. Feldman. He’s an interesting character: he’s helpful, but indecision and his ultimate insight and understanding drive the plot forward. Feldman was one of Joseph Campbell’s assistants. inside Monomyth, Campbell explains that: “For those who have not refused the call, the first encounter on the hero’s journey is with a protective figure (often a little old crone or old man) who supplies the adventurer with talismans against the dragon forces. Passing. An image that represents is the benign, protecting force of destiny.” (Wikipedia. Monomyth) Feldman helps Ashley and Craig figure out what’s going on. This relationship is a satisfying aspect of the novel.

Ashley and Craig share a love of horseback riding. As mentioned, horses have always represented strong emotions and passionate desires in literature, and the same is true in this case. The third time to die. Since DH Lawrence, the horse has been a prime representation of sexuality, freedom and power. In the novel Ashley’s horse represents all the freedom of her youth, the sexuality her unfulfilling marriage has robbed her of, as well as the links to the past. A secondary meaning of the horse spirit animal is the balance between the instinctive and controlled parts of your personality. Ashley is more real when she is with her horse Injun than when she is at home. She feels freer, her conversation with Craig is more natural, but she learns more about herself and the problems that are bothering her: “Jeez, it just started! The feeling of walking through the woods and whispering thoughts in French. So intense. Nothing like now. Why does Kalpana haunt him whenever he jumps on a horse?” (Bernstein, p. 87). It symbolizes the nature/culture dichotomy.

The structure of the story is the first long section with several sections that establish different relationships. Ashley spends considerable time analyzing her (hopeless) marriage, before concluding that there is nothing to do. This chapter was long and drawn out. I wondered why it took so long to get a resolution to this point. Once the relationship with Craig was established and Bernstein was able to bring the pair together, the book moved at a great pace.

In the final section the plot line is drawn to a satisfying conclusion and the relationship and future of the lovers, and the situation of the nemesis are well resolved. A final cataclysmic climax is well done and keeps the reader guessing until the last moment.

The role of money in the novel is interesting: Ashley is well off, thanks to her father’s money. He uses processes and systems and works for them to improve his life instead of making more money. It is a positive role for women.

A 3rd Time to Die A love story with a twist, a supernatural mystery with an interesting heroine and a plot development that was very satisfying. The characters develop in interesting ways over time and as the novel progresses. The relationship was interesting and well drawn. The plot line is drawn to a satisfying conclusion, and the mystery of the love affair and foreboding destruction is well resolved. The conclusion is interesting and the answer unexpected and delightfully surprising. I am happy to rate this book as 4 out of 5 stars.
