Effective Research

The problem raises some important questions about the possibility of perfect research, a research output or research process. What is research? What is the absolute basis of research? Why is research started? How is research conducted? How is research evaluated? What is perfection? Is perfection effective during the research process? What is effective research management? What is a research paper? We will try to answer the above questions.

The Oxford Dictionary defines research as the careful study of a subject, especially to discover new facts or information about it. A study is either a summary of data or an evaluation of some data already discovered. Literally, research involves “researching” what others have written on the subject. A research is a mixture of data, evaluation and innovation. First, it provides information on a particular subject or topic, second, evaluates previous research or reviews relevant literature, and finally, new work adds some innovative aspects, both practical as well as conceptual.

Man is a combination of three basic realities, i.e. body, mind and soul. Human activities are shaped by physical needs, psychological instincts, and soul urges. At the physical level, an important physical need is leisure or rest. At the psychological level, an important emotional instinct is curiosity. Again, on the spiritual level, an important soul urge is perfection. The multiple reasons for research are the physical demand for more leisure, the intellectual thrust due to innate curiosity, the perfectionist desire of the soul in the soul’s inherent urge towards perfection. The basis of human anatomy is thus the ultimate basis of research, so that research continues forever. There is no possibility of perfect research in any subject.

There are two levels of life, individual and collective. Collective life is a contractual arrangement of leaders and followers. Institutions are an inevitable aspect of collective life. An organization works under the supervision of leaders. Leaders initiate a series of programs to maintain their authority over followers or to maintain the smooth sailing of the organization. A follower may change his mind about leadership because of stagnant, poor and corrupt governance. The solution to formal or non-performing institutional setups is the introduction of innovation, both conceptual as well as practical. Consequently, innovations are introduced from time to time. The foundation of innovation is the initiation of new and innovative research. Leaders (social or economic or political) initiate research from time to time to maintain the fabric of collective life. At the intellectual level, the conducted research tends towards perfection but practically it achieves only a fair result due to the financial and non-financial constraints imposed by the leaders.

A study is conducted by intellectuals. Intellectuals/scientists are the creative group of a society. They now and then take ideas from multiple life events. Reception of ideas is the special psycho-social power of intellectuals/scientists. An idea is like a plant seed. They mull it over and evaluate the effectiveness of the idea. Finally, they are positive towards the productivity of their ideas. They allocate/arrange resources for concept realization. Sharing ideas with entrepreneurs (social or economic or political) is an important step for resource management. A concept realization activity is the self-fulfillment of the intellectual/scientist. It is worth noting that an entrepreneur’s or society’s proactive approach to new ideas is critical to the realization of intellectual creativity.

Research evaluation is an important step in conducting effective research. Research management is a professional job. Although, it is research-driven work but it is not research, it is the management of research efforts. Generally, research is evaluated on the basis of practical results rather than intellectual strength. The significant stakeholders of a research are entrepreneurs, government and general public. A research will be productive if it increases the profits of the entrepreneur, the power of the government and the welfare of the public. It is worth noting that the perfectionist tendency of intellectuals/researchers is not the determining factor for research results; It is effectiveness that determines the acceptability of research. It is said that a tree is recognized by its fruit so the same is true about research output.

There are two aspects of perfection, relative and absolute. An absolute perfection is a temporal and non-spatial phenomenon, while a relative perfection is a temporal-spatial phenomenon. Usually, a creative work is only relatively perfect. Overtime it loses its effectiveness, people search for something new. It has happened many times and will happen from time to time. For example, during the 19th century, scientists became perfectionists in their research. They were painting only a statistical picture of everything. In the first decade of the 20th century, Einstein, Jung, Gestalt, Keynes, Iqbal, Bergson and Bertrand Russell broke the myth of perfectionism or the small truth. They have refined the accepted facts and opened up new vistas of research.

A research is either positive or beneficial to multiple stakeholders of the research or detrimental to them. The practical results of research and the resource input of research determine the effectiveness of conducting research. A positive research idea of intellectuals/scientists is transformed into some invention or creative work, innovation is transformed into innovation by entrepreneurs, innovation is accepted by public or rejected by them. A recognized innovation is either temporary or permanent. A temporary result is obsolete, sooner or later. For example, 19th century communication systems are 21st century history. Democracy, on the other hand, is a lasting result of the 18th/19th century Enlightenment intellectuals. We are reaping the benefits of democracy established by Abraham Lincoln in America, Churchill in Europe and Mohammad Ali Jinnah in Pakistan.

A research paper is a formal presentation of research. The very beginning of a research paper is the introduction of the focal idea of the research. A researcher then reviews the relevant literature to focus his mind on the validity or significance of the concept. A specific research methodology is outlined to achieve better results from the research effort. Now, the researcher logically and forcefully explains the research findings. Finally, the researcher discusses both practical and conceptual implications of the research effort. A good research paper indicates some possible steps for further research as a perfect research is not possible due to multiple constraints both financial and non-financial. A research paper follows the same pattern, but is less formal.
