According to history, in 527 AD, an emperor named Wu Di invited an Indian monk named Bodhidharma to travel to China. The purpose of the journey was to come to Bodhidharma and teach his fellow monks some exercises to strengthen their bodies. Monks in Henan Province were often attacked by bandits and had no training in how to defend themselves.

After arriving at Henan Temple, Bodhidharma meditated for nine long years. After he finished meditation, Bodhidharma wrote two books called “I Jin Jing” and “Shi Sui Jing”. The first was exercises for developing external strength and the second was about meditation and breathing. After completing the two books, he wrote a third book titled “Shi Bao Luo Han Shou” (Lohan’s Eighteen Hands), which was about his experiences as a member of the Kshatriya Hall. Nevertheless, Bodhidharma was careful to teach his monk-students the virtue of restraint. He taught them that even in martial arts care must be taken to avoid overtraining. Some studies show that too much intense physical training can affect one’s infertility. An investigation by health experts found that excessive exercise causes fatigue, which temporarily reduces the number and quality of sperm. Other studies have noted that men who exercised to exhaustion produced fewer sperm during ejaculation. Experts say that this happens because the body literally “kills” itself during training. To build muscle and improve the body, it must be restored to achieve normal cell development. Strenuous physical activity can decrease the level of hormones in the bloodstream that affect sperm production. Medical experts believe that after about three days the sperm count returns to almost normal. They added that drinking coffee after several hours of training may protect sperm quality due to caffeine’s antioxidants.

In fact, understanding the benefits of martial arts and exercise can change one’s life. If done correctly, these arts can promote good health and a better sex life.
