Can Speed Reading Be Learned By Younger Students?

Speed reading is a powerful skill that enables anyone to quickly take control of the important information they need to learn. However, most people learning how to read fast are adults. Many parents who already are experiencing the benefits from speed reading, often ask if their younger children can learn this skill. The short answer is yes and no. It depends more upon a student’s reading skills than their age. Let me explain this in more detail.

During the first three years of elementary school, most students can not read. Teachers of younger students in these grades focus upon teaching them how to read. Reading comprehension problems usually begin emerging in the fourth grade and higher. Why? The fourth grade is the first grade where reading becomes critical. You see, in the fourth grade and beyond you need to read to learn. If you haven’t learned to read by the fourth grade, you will begin falling behind in all of your content subject areas that require you to read to learn.

Teachers know that the fourth grade is where many students start experiencing problems with their reading. However, many students have excellent reading skills at this age. There was a group of students in Scarborough Ontario in the Third grade that come to mind. This group of nine year olds all were reading at the eighth grade level. At the end of a four hour reading class every child in the group had at least doubled their reading speed. One young girl was tested, and found to be reading at 5 seconds a page. More importantly, she had complete comprehension.

Another example of young children speed reading occurred in Hilton Head Island. Two nine year old twins enrolled in a speed reading program. By the end of the program Ariel was reading an astounding 770 words per minute. Her sister, Miyah was reading at 370 words per minute. Both with full comprehension. Let’s put their reading speeds into perspective. The average adult readings between 150-400 words per minute. The mode, or most common reading speed observed is about 200 words per minute. Since these were nine year old children, they were already reading at speeds most adults would envy.

So how can you tell if your younger student is ready to learn how to speed up their reading? First, they will have the ability to read at least at the sixth grade level. But here is another very important indicator. They want to learn how to read faster. Younger children often have shorter attention spans. If you try to force a younger child to learn this skill, even if they have a sixth grade reading level, you will not get good results.

In summary, a child with sixth grade reading ability, regardless of their age, who wants to learn how to read faster should be able to accomplish this goal. In my next article, I will describe how improve the reading skills for younger students who are not ready to learn how to speed read.
