10 Ways To Increase Your Self-Confidence
If you look at the most successful people, you will find that they all have one thing in common – confidence. Yes, some people are born with it but for most other people it is a learned skill.
Here are my top tips for boosting your confidence:
1. Work on your body language.
We’ve all been to the point where someone so ordinary walks into a room, makes eye contact and starts wowing everyone with their socks off. Or where you think someone is at least 6 feet tall by their bearing and the way they carry themselves and then you realize they’re pretty average.
Like it or not – first impressions count. So stand tall and practice good posture. Imagine a string going from your toes to the top of your head pulling you down. And whenever you enter a room, don’t walk around apologetically. Go ahead, make eye contact and be the first to introduce yourself.
2. Engage in a physical activity – walking, swimming etc.
Any physical exercise like walking, running, dancing etc. will make you feel good about yourself. First, exercise releases all those feel-good hormones and then improves your body image the fitter you get.
3. Wear clothes that fit you properly.
In the past, I’ve made the mistake of trying to disguise my body flaws by wearing baggy clothes. do you have The truth is that wearing unflattering clothes only accentuates the areas you’re trying to cover up. These big, baggy t-shirts do most women no favors. In fact, they make you look bigger.
Sometimes we squeeze ourselves into a pair of jeans (in the right size) but the cut makes them look terrible. It is much better to buy a larger size and be comfortable. It’s not the size that fits.
4. Be kind to yourself.
Think about the things you say to yourself when you make mistakes. Would you say the same thing to your friends? Probably not. When we make mistakes, we are often too hard on ourselves. Yet we treat others much, much better. Next time this happens, stop and start talking to yourself like you would a friend.
5. Remind yourself often of your good qualities.
Do you know what your best qualities are? Are you kind and compassionate? Do you treat people fairly? Are you a friendly person? Do you want to help people?
Make a list of at least five good qualities and remind yourself of them every day, but especially when you’re having a bad day.
6. Don’t dwell on your past mistakes.
Accept that mistakes do not define who you are. You can fail the exam without failing. Your relationship has gone downhill but that doesn’t mean you’re a failure.
Keep things in perspective. It just means you failed test or that the relationship has failed.
7. Surround yourself with supportive people.
When you’re feeling down or low-key, the last thing you need is to be surrounded by naysayers and negative people telling you that “all men suck” or “it’s impossible to get what you’re doing”.
Choose who you share your heart with and surround yourself with people who will encourage and inspire people. If you don’t have many of those in your life, contact me and I’ll be your cheerleader!
8. Keep learning new skills
Aside from keeping your mind sharp (and preventing Alzheimer’s), become a lifelong learner. I’m not necessarily talking about formal education.
What’s stopping you from learning a new language, taking a dance class, learning some new computer skills, blogging, etc.
9. Take time to reach out to other people through community programs etc.
If you’re ever feeling down, there’s nothing better than helping other people. Volunteer your services at a children’s orphanage or old age home.
My challenge to you is – the next time you eat at a restaurant, instead of sending half your food back to the kitchen, take a doggy bag and give it to the nearest corner beggar. His praise will melt the hardest of hearts.
10. Learn to stand up for yourself
When you speak up for yourself, your soul dies little by little every time you stay silent. Being a doormat is unattractive and will get you nowhere in the long run.
If haven’t practiced much before, start with small things. Emphasize low-fat milk in your coffee. Return milk that has turned sour before the due date. If you receive bad customer service, write a letter of complaint. And only when you feel more confident, tackle big issues like talking to your boss about overloading you with work or your friends about relationship problems.
Learn to say no. This is not an oath – I promise.
