Big Things Have Small Beginnings

This is an excerpt from the book and movie titled “Lawrence of Arabia”. If you haven’t seen that film, I suggest you watch it and pay close attention to some of the characters whose lives sing. For the most part, the story is true. It seems that as the vast majority of people stumble through their lives and react to what happens to them, often, one comes upon a world-shaping scene.

The thing about TE Lawrence is that he was recognized at a young age, his ability to make a significant difference. In fact, read about the film before you watch it. See how a man of privilege, who seemed mediocre at best, identified the world he would change, studied it, and prepared to enter it before an opportunity arose that would allow him to plan how to do it. That’s such out-of-bounds thinking from the rest of us. The rest of us, who are Do not stumble, achieving something, but perhaps something small, something that only enriches us. Yet, it is rare to find a man as accomplished as Lawrence, who could achieve greatness for himself, yet chose to help a man become great, and not those with whom he was associated. If he fails to influence the Arab, he will be killed. He hired an Arab guide, and directly, he listened to the guide and he advised him as a father might advise a son. The two of them play a game during their journey, each trying to be the most moral. When Lawrence realized that his Arab guide appreciated personal weapons, he gave him his pistol, his only personal protection. Already, he reasoned that he wasn’t going to achieve anything worthwhile by personal combat, so he didn’t need a pistol. Instead, he will do great things by personal example.

Without consequence, Lawrence created a consequence when he stood before the Arab leader when the leader killed the guide because he drank water from the leader’s tribal well. Risking his own life, risking any magnanimity he could, Lawrence chided the leader for valuing his tribal trappings so highly and the life of an Arab brother so little. It was the small, but risky beginning of a great thing.

If you are going to do something big with your life, you must be all in. If you are truthful and transparent, no one will find fault. Other people follow those who behave this way. They follow people who give meaning to everyone’s life. The key to achieving great things is being a true leader, and being prepared to plan and lead. That’s how you and others who follow you will do something bigger than you.
