Persistence Is the Key

People who become leaders in their lives instead of going with the flow and accepting the scraps that life throws at them understand the power of persistence.

Earl Nightingale, American radio speaker and author, said, “Sometimes there is a hidden guide somewhere whose duty it is to test men and women through all kinds of discouraging experiences. Those who pick themselves up after falling and keep trying come. It is a strange thing, but it works. And this hidden guideline doesn’t allow anyone to enjoy great achievement without passing the persistence test, it seems. And those who can’t take it simply don’t make the grade.” (From the book “Transformational Living” by Earl Nightingale)

Nightingale continues, “And those who can take it are richly rewarded for their perseverance. They receive as their compensation the goal they are pursuing. And that is not all, for they receive something infinitely more important than material compensation, though they receive it. But they learn that every failure brings with it an equal seed of advantage. There are exceptions to this rule. Few people have learned from experience that perseverance is tenacity. They are the ones who accept defeat as nothing more than temporary. They are the ones whose desire is so persistently applied. is done that defeat eventually turns into victory.”

W. Clement Stone tells the story of Tom, “who was born without half of his right leg and a stub of his right arm. As a boy, he wanted to be involved in sports like other boys. He had a burning desire. To play football. Because of this desire, his parents Made him an artificial leg. It was made of wood. The wooden leg was attached to a special stubby soccer shoe. Hour after hour, day after day, he practiced kicking. Soccer with his wooden leg. He could kick field goals from long distances. Tried and kept trying. He became so good that he was recruited by the New Orleans Saints.”

Nightingale said, “What would you say is a person’s chances of playing professional football if he was born without half of his right leg and a withered hand?”

66,910 football fans could be heard screaming “When Tom Dempsey, on his crippled leg, kicked the longest field goal in professional football, in the last two seconds of the game, to give the Saints a nineteen to seventeen victory over the Detroit Lions.”

“We got beat by a miracle,” Detroit coach Joseph Schmidt said.

The truth of the matter was “by perseverance they were beaten.”

Tom Dempsey was persistent and willing to work hard to reach his goals. He fell in love with the process of becoming the best kicker he could be. Although he had different abilities than his teammates; He was determined with a positive attitude, always looking forward!

How strong is your burning desire to reach your goals? If you were to create a 3 step process, what would it look like? What is your first step?

Saints owner Gail Benson said, “Tom’s life spoke directly to the strength of the human spirit and exemplified his determination not to let that stop him from pursuing his dreams and aspirations. In recent years he exemplified the same fight and tenacity as he bravely fought through illness. against but never succumbed and maintained his trademark sense of humour. He holds a special place in the hearts and minds of the Sadhu family.”

Tom Dempsey was an inspiration to others until his death in 2020 and his legacy lives on.

We’ve all felt the pangs of regret when we quit a difficult job, knowing we somehow short-changed our true potential. Conversely, most of us have experienced the joy of hard-earned victory when the future seemed bleak.

Earl Nightingale, read “About the great Knute Rockne of Notre Dame who believed in, and practiced, the reward of perseverance.”

“He had a blood clot in one of his legs, and his doctors told him that if the clot broke free, it could kill him if it got to his heart, brain or lungs. But the Notre Dame team was playing far away from home that day. , and he insisted on being taken to the game on a stretcher. So, they took him to where the game was to be played. And they took him to the dressing room where his football players were getting ready for the game. And his face was sweating and he was in terrible pain and he “This team you’re playing today beat us last year,” he said, straining at the elbow.

“I want you to go out there and win.” He then said, “The team that can’t be beaten, can’t be beaten.”

Rockne “then fell on his stretcher, breathless and in terrible pain, and the team went out and won the game, and they never lost again as long as Nat Rockne lived, for when they saw the kind of courage he could develop, despite his flat back he How steadfastly fought to win, it made giants out of men.”

Nightingale: “And those who stand by life see an overwhelming number who go down in defeat, never to rise again. They see a small number who take the punishment of defeat as an urge to greater effort. And luckily they never learn. Accept life’s reverse gear. to take, but what we do not see, which most of us never suspected existed, is the silent but irresistible force which comes to the rescue of the combatant in the face of discouragement.”

“Now if we talk about this power, let us call it perseverance and let it be. One thing we all know, if one does not possess perseverance, one cannot achieve significant success in any calling.”

Ask yourself these three questions to reach your goals or dreams:

1) Do you have a burning desire to reach your goals or dreams?

2) What is your step-by-step process to reach your goal or dream?

3) Are you willing to persevere and work like Tom Dempsey?
