Monster Files, a Book Review

Author Nick Redfern reveals monsters and government secrets

For Your Eyes Only – The Fantastic Beasts Dossier

Why would any government care about an abominable snowman, the Loch Ness Monster, or a far-fetched camp-fire story? And yet they are, and with alarming consistency. Blowing the lid off accepted weird creature anecdotes, acclaimed author Nick Redfern doesn’t settle for stale explanations, instead Monster file, he provides, at every turn, a compelling vision of potential government involvement of a covert nature. Monster Files is exactly what the name suggests; Investigations into government secrets, Freedom of Information Act documents, first-hand accounts, long-story investigations and dogged research. The result is a fascinating mix of wonder and intrigue.

Following a simple timeline of monstrous events, the book begins with Teddy Roosevelt’s Bigfoot story and ends with modern-day beasts.

Not every animal is a target of government interest; Some monsters are introduced to serve as preludes to the story after the official engagement. However, it is not so easy to narrowly categorize every case. Some monsters are ‘used’ by the government as clever misdirection, as a ‘wild-goose-chase’ to hide top secret projects and advanced weapons. At other times, these same entities have a curious interest in all things paranormal. At times, they seem impressed or even frightened by both the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Ocean Service (NOA).Mermaids do not exist!

At other times, governments have technological interests, such as with extinct creatures of the werewolf and bigfoot variety, where multidimensional supertechnologies can be used for our government’s own nefarious purposes.

In The Monster Files, Nick Redfern shows that he is a writer and researcher willing to offer original conclusions and ideas in what might otherwise be familiar anecdotes. His explanation for the origin of the somewhat famous, or infamous, sighting of the Flatwoods monster in the small town of Flatwoods, West Virginia in 1952 is original and a little thought-provoking.

Oddity files are frequent and varied in size.

Government research about the psychic abilities of cats and dogs to find hidden mines? It’s true! That research also showed that cats and dogs transfer ESP information between each other.

FDR green-lighting project to use bats as living bombs? Yes! It’s here too!

Monster armies and ape-human hybrids

A book about monsters would not be complete without the creation, real or rumored, of the scientific Dr. Frankenstein. Redfern explores the story of Russian physiologist Ilya Ivanov, who in the late 1920s was recruited by none other than Joseph Stalin to create an army from a genetically split half-man/half-ape race. The book is good at digging for the truth behind such wild claims and its author is not one to take such stories at face value. There’s something here for skeptics and believers. Redfern covers all the bases.

And about the reality of Russian apes?

“What we have here, then, is a story that has some truth to it, describing a very real attempt to create a human-ape hybrid that was Adopted by the scientific elite of the Soviet Union, that was Funded by the Soviet Academy of Sciences, and itdid have the support of the Bolshevik government.”

Stalin’s involvement, however, as the author points out, remains to be seen.

There are also other ape-men, long-lost-cousin species, and possibly Neanderthals who are shown to see some of the stories.

The end of Chapter 3 is the best, telling the story of Lt. Col. Karapetyan in the Medial Service of the Soviet Army in World War II. A strange-looking man was caught; whom the Soviets initially believed to be spies. Covered in a long brown coat of shaggy hair, six feet tall with powerful arms, the beast had to be kept in a cold room because it could not withstand the heat.

The prospect of any future visit to this ape at my local zoo’s monkey exhibit is a dismaying one.

Indian Jones: Monster Hunter

Adventurer Tom Slick, a possible real-life inspiration for Indiana Jones, is profiled in his possible involvement as a CIA spy. Slick studied at Harvard and MIT, served in the Navy during the Pacific engagement of World War II, and played key roles in three groups that later became the Texas Bio-Medical Research Institute and the Southwest Research Institute. For all serious purposes, Slick was a man with strong connections to important people. He was also a world-traveling adventurer with a very real passion for mystical creatures like the famous Yeti, AKA the Abominable Snowman.

The real reason, as some have theorized, was that Tom Slick’s 1956 expedition to Tibet was intended not only to search for yetis, but to use the expedition as a cover story for a secret CIA mission to spy on the occupying Communist Chinese government. Attempted occupation of Tibet. The evidence presented in the Monster Files certainly lends credibility to Slicks’ covert role. Redfern cites a 1959 document from the US State Department titled: Regulations covering mountain climbing expeditions in Nepal – related to the Yeti.

And it doesn’t end there. That chapter ties together the loose threads of the JFK assassination, Bigfoot, and the budding career of none other than George HW Bush (AKA Bush 41) and neatly ties them together in one tight bundle!

The real scare came at the end of that chapter with the mysterious death of Tom Slick on October 6th, 1962. Returning from a hunting trip while flying over Montana, the Slicks plane appears to have disintegrated in flight. As you can imagine, ominous notes of a conspiracy are heard. Did the CIA monster hunter know one-many-many secrets, secrets that destroyed him in an early grave?

Locking the mystery of Loch?

Our friend Nessie, the great Loch Ness Monster, is visited many times and revisited for various reasons throughout the book. The good thing is that it is not old. You still have many questions. Of course, the Nessie could be a ruse by the British government to hide sophisticated weapons, argues The Monster Files, but then, that doesn’t explain the sightings before the discovery of the submarine, as the author also points out.

And then there’s British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s interest in protecting Nessie for Scottish tourism!

The hot idea for me in the Monster File was, how could there be so many sightings of a large animal that could not survive on such a meager food supply as provided by the loach? The possibility that Nessie might actually be the ghost of an extinct dinosaur is a mind-blowing idea.

Bigfoot: What the US Government Doesn’t Want You to Know

Mount St. Helens erupted in May 1980 with tremendous violence. Once all the volcanic ash had settled, there were rumors and scattered reports that several animals, such as sasquatches, were driven away by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Chapter 18 contains more surprises, but the reason for any government involvement can only be speculated. The book alludes to the idea that these beasts, Bigfoots, have some sort of special ability that the military is studying.

There is also a chapter on UFOs and Bigfoot. The fact that these beings can jump to other dimensions and have psychic powers is a possible reason for government/military involvement.

Monster mash-up

There are many stories that captivate and enthrall, and the short story about the US government trying to warm up an ordinary house cat to work as a spy was, for me, a show-stopper. This is one of many that this book must have In the case of the isolated Bigfoot, Princess Dee and the large black killer cat, the WWII werewolf; It’s all page-turning stuff! There are so many good stories that highlight that any one story hurts other weird stories. Nick Redfern’s Monster Files delivers mystery, monsters, intrigue and excitement. It is a book to read and read again.
