Movie Crazy

Are you crazy about movies? No, I don’t mean crazy about Harold Lloyd’s comedies The movie is crazy From 1932, about a young man with little or no acting ability, desperately trying to stay in the movies. I mean, are you crazy for movies? I must admit that I am a cracker for movies. So, all those who consider themselves movie freaks, raise your hand. Yes, that’s almost everyone. Why are we crazy about movies? Why do we live in a movie crazy society? Hey, what’s the movie anyway?

Films are ideas and/or stories that convey emotion to an audience through words and an uninterrupted sequence of images. Thanks to Google Search.

How popular is the movie? Well, the keyword “movies” boggles 1.1 billion minds and a growing number of searches on Google’s search engine alone. And the keyword “movie trailer” garnered 127 million plus searches. Watching movie trailers on the internet has become a popular past-time for many. I know my husband is one of them. He loves watching his movie trailers.

This past year alone brought in an astounding $29.2 billion worldwide box office for 2009. Films are watched and produced worldwide. The language gap has dissolved due to the addition of subtitles. Now we can all share the Universal Cinema experience. Apart from being universal, movies are made for everyone, young and old. Why you might even see Generations at Disney or kids movie screenings. There is something for everyone no matter what your age.

We celebrate movies and we celebrate our movie stars. We bring it home with TV shows dedicated to stars like ET, ET Canada, Access Hollywood and TMZ. We scan supermarket tabloids like The National Enquirer and Star for the latest celebrity gossip and stuff them into our shopping carts when no one is looking.

We have Oscar parties like we do Superbowl parties and even make bets or at least announce our opinion on who will win the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, MTV Awards, etc. Then there are classic TV shows like ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous’ That we faithfully turned oohing and aahing over the content as if it were fine wine. The show ran for over 10 years (March 1984 – September 1995). What a run! What an idea! We actually got to tag along and jump in with the stars’ extravagant homes, lifestyles and dream vacation spots. Today, you can watch similar shows on MTVthe ribs and VH1’s ‘The Fabulous Life of….’

If you are more of a homebody, you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home to watch movies. You can literally channel movies on your TV through regular cable or special movie channels like Thrill, The Movie Network, HBO, Movie Central, Showtime, Turner Classic Movies, etc. and record it on your PVR after you’ve clicked through the week’s TV movies. Sent your kids to the video store to rent a movie done or one of this week’s new releases. Oh, and not to mention you can buy movies from your brick and mortar video store down the street or even online on eBay or Amazon.

How can we get our golden ticket to this great palace? We buy cereal boxes and cut up cardboard vouchers, we use our air miles points or reward points to convert cash into movie tickets. We fill out contest forms hoping to be lucky enough to attend a pre-screening of our favorite movie before we get to the theater. We also grace red carpets around the world and tune in to interview celebrities on our favorite daytime and nighttime shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, Oprah and Regis & Kelly.

What beats the cinema experience? nothing We collect our tickets, buy our favorite items, grab the latest celebrity or tribute magazine for our casual light reading before the movie (while eating our original buttered popcorn or bag of booze). The lights dim, the screen widens, and images and sounds come on simultaneously. We anticipate movie previews while watching nuisance ads and then they are there. Those big beautiful coming attractions in all their glory. We whisper yes or no or give thumbs up to friends sitting next to us as we plan the next movie adventure. Then if we’re lucky, that is, the boys will hear the bellows of THX sound effects that roar around the theater. (Hey guys, you can listen to it on YouTube or download it as a free mp3 or ringtone). Then the wait is over. Whoop! And the adventure begins…

Again, why are we crazy about movies? It may be because movies are cheap; A cheap date; Or an economical family travel. Can the encounter be enhanced through an Imax or 3-D experience? Or goes deeper. A chance to escape the real world for just a few hours. Movies evoke emotions be it excitement, laughter, terror, sadness, inspiration, faith, love etc. Maybe you’re having an unexpected adventure, unraveling a mystery or seeing a family deal with loss. Movies take us away; Wherever we want to go. Even the theater itself is an experience as we discovered. The lights, the sounds, the feel, the big screen, the comfortable oversized fabric chairs, the convenient cup holders, the popcorn and cobblers from the snack stand, etc. The cinema experience really touches all our senses. Which movies have moved you emotionally lately?

Movies are a place where you can choose what you want to see and experience If I want to be happy, I’ll go watch a light comedy. If I want a thrill, I’ll go see a thriller or horror. And if I want to entertain my little nieces and nephews, I’ll go watch the latest animated movies, etc. Then there are the rest of the genres that fill the cinematic experience: Action & Adventure, Crime & Gangster, Drama, Epic/Historical, Musical/Dance, Science-Fiction, War, Documentary, Western, Biopic, Chick-Flicks, Detective & Mystery, Disaster, Fantasy, Film Noir, Guy Film, Melodrama/Weeper, Road Film, Romance, Sports, Supernatural etc.

Movies bring people together. These are things to talk about at the watering hole of your 9 to 5 job, chat among your Facebook friends, or discuss in forums. We can talk about the worst movies we’ve ever seen or our favorite movies of all time. We can quiz each other about movie trivia, quotes and songs. We can read or write movie reviews, check movie ratings and buy movie books. We can even get the latest Hollywood gossip delivered to our email boxes or go online to read blogs like Leonard Maltin’s Movie Crazy blog.

Are there any benefits from movies other than the whole entertainment experience? Actually, there is. Many professional therapists are using movies to help people in crisis. There is a therapeutic movement using—you guessed it—film. It is called cinema therapy. Cinema therapy is used because it is readily available (there is a movie theater in every city) and the content of most movies is familiar to everyone. It enhances the relationship between both client and therapist. Who doesn’t want to talk about movies?

Other benefits include expressing emotions such as when we laugh during a comedy our laughter expresses stress, tension and/or pain. A tear jerker that releases built-up/blocked emotions that make us cry. How about movies that touch on relationships or parenting? These observations and/or lessons can bring us closer to people, analyze our current situations/relationships, or make us realize that we have work to do.

And if there’s one last thing that cements our movie-crazy mentality, it’s our wish or desire to actually be in a movie and/or meet a movie star. Well, this is just in—you can do both. Have you heard the term TV or movies? extra? If you want better than a bird’s eye view of the making of a movie and want to come face to face with a movie star or two sign up to be an extra. You will get paid, fed, stay on set and bump elbows with your favorite movie stars.
