Top Five Places to Visit in Jamaica
“Life is a big road with many signposts. So when you’re passing through the ribs, don’t complicate your mind. Run away from hatred, malice and envy. Don’t bury your thoughts, keep your vision in reality. Wake up. Up and live!” A famous quote from Good ole Bob Marley!
Jamaica has its ups and downs like any other country but I must tell you that this place is beautiful and still populated by wonderful fun people. How do I know it? Well, frankly this is the place I call home. In my twenty-four years of life – in and out of Jamaica – I have witnessed some very beautiful scenes. In fact just the other day I went to a beach not listed on the radar, it goes by the name of ”Cotton Tree”…it’s a great sight to see! On your next trip or visit to Jamaica, once you are in the Ocho Rios area, please be sure to ask your tour guide about this hidden treasure…it truly is a masterpiece.
Well, let’s get to know the top 5 places to visit in Jamaica.
Bob Marley’s Nine Mile – St. Ann
Give or take, you already know this but for potential viewers reading this, allow me to enlighten you. Nine Mile is the birthplace and final resting place of the late legend Robert ”Nesta” Marley, better known as Bob Marley.
Fun Fact: Bob Marley was best known for his reggae songs, including “I Shot the Sheriff”, “No Woman, No Cry”, “Three Little Birds”, “Exodus”, “Could You Be Loved”, “Jammin”, “Redemption Song”, and “One Love”.
Nine Mile is located just outside of a place we call Brown’s Town, St. Ann. Bob Marley’s Nine Mile Tour will take you through several villages. Ask your tour guide to stop once in a while or allow a few of these villages if you have time as it is truly an eye opener. Here you can learn about rural Jamaica – the real Jamaica.
You’ll probably be greeted by a street-man upon reaching Bob Marley’s Nine Mile. He is responsible for opening the gate wide enough for the driver to enter the compound and then, he locks it. Here’s a heads up for you. They will assure you that the laws inside the compound are completely different from those outside the massive walls. What is so different? Ganja and herbs growing behind that gate is a wonderful sight!
Dunn’s River Falls – St. Ann
The famous Dunn’s River Falls are located on the north coast of the island, just outside of Ocho Rios. Don’s River Falls is very unique. The sound of water rushing over those huge rocks, the fresh scent in the atmosphere, the green vegetation! Sigh, it’s absolutely amazing! As a visitor to this beautiful piece of paradise, you are given the opportunity to climb – up or down – the falls by yourself or with the help of a tour guide. Hint, if it’s your first time I recommend using a tour guide as they already know the place and will be able to show you the foot holds among other things that will get you down the falls safely. At the top of the falls you will find tranquility.
Fun Facts: 1. There isn’t much sound from the rushing water only the wonderful sound of birds chirping and singing while exploring the habitat.
2. While climbing down you must notice some small pools naturally created by mother nature, where you can relax, take pictures or do whatever you like. Doctor’s Cove Beach –
Port Royal – Port Royal
Port Royal was once a popular place for pirates to come and spend their wealth. It has earned the reputation as the richest and most wicked city in the world! In the 17th century the British actively encouraged and paid buccaneers stationed at Port Royal to attack ships belonging to Spanish and French colonists!
Fun fact: On June 7, 1962, a massive earthquake hit Port Royal. As a result of this particular earthquake, two thirds of this city sank into the Caribbean Sea! That’s it!
Today Port Royal is known as “The City That Sunk” and is still covered by about twenty-five feet of water.
History is a wonderful thing. It is said that pirates from all over the world gathered at Port Royal after this devastating event. They came all the way from Madagascar, far away in Africa.
Rose Hall Great House – St James’s
Rose Hall Great House is a very popular attraction, both with locals and visitors. This great house was the home of The Late Annie Palmer, otherwise known as “The White Witch of Rose Hall”. For as long as I can remember Annie Palmer has always been painted as a beautiful but extremely deformed character. Legend has it that Annie Palmer – The White Witch of Rose Hall – took great pleasure in practicing witchcraft, hypnotizing the young white women who visited the island and to top it all off… legend has it that she was a born killer her husbands all died suspiciously! Among other things of course but that would be too long for me to get into today.
And last but certainly not least is Dolphin’s Cove – Ocho Rios St. Ann
Dolphins Cove has been named the largest marine attraction in the entire Caribbean! So not something! Dolphin Cove is the perfect host for a day of family fun. For a fee, you are given the opportunity to interact with their marine animals such as dolphins, manta-rays (without barbs), nurse sharks, etc. I think it will be easier if I give you a brief description of their packages:
o “Touch” program
o “Encounter Swim” with Dolphins
o “Swim” with dolphins
o Swimming, holding and feeding sharks
o Be a “Sea Guard for a Day”.
Although marine animals are not the only thing they cater to, they host activities such as nature walks where you can interact with animals such as:
Donkeys, goats, sheep, iguanas, Jamaican yellow snake (non-venomous), turtles, ducks, birds, etc. If you don’t know what some of these animals are just do a Google search using the image feature, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for.
