Ramakalmedu Viewpoint

Ramkalmedu has places like Frog Rock, Turtle Rock and Kerala’s tallest twin-statue; Kurban and Kurthi are called. The place gets its name from the footprints found on the rock surface here, which are believed to be those of Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, according to the Indian epic Ramayana.
Although Ramakkalmedu has the potential to become an international tourist destination and has already attracted more than 100,000 visitors. However, as of 2015, not much has been done to improve basic facilities nearby. The Kerala government has announced plans to develop this tourist station by improving transport facilities with buses, upgrading the Kerala Police and other measures.
Ramkalmedu is a historical site with a monument of Kuravan and Kurathi – a large statue depicting the Sangam period and Sangam landscape of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The monument offers a panoramic view of the villages and towns of Tamil Nadu, including Kumbum, Theni, Kombe, Thevaram, Uthamapalayam, Bodinaikannar and Vaiga. Rolling green hills and fresh mountain air make Ramkalmedu an enchanting retreat. The view is attractive in the evening when all these cities are lit up. Rama – Kal – Medu literally means “Rama’s stone country” or “the land where Rama set his feet” (Rama is a Hindu god in the epic Ramayana). One story says that Lord Rama placed his feet on the tip of Ramakkalmedu to find Ravana, king of Lanka, who had abducted his wife Sita.
The statue of CB Jinan was installed on the hilltop in 2005. The statue depicts the two historical figures behind the construction of the Idukki Dam. The rocks between the Idukki Dam are named after Kuravan and Kurathi, who helped the authorities find the right place to build the dam. Constant wind is another factor that makes Ramakkalmedu unique. Regardless of the season and time, the wind blows at Ramakkalmedu at a speed of around 35 km/h throughout the year.
Villages such as Pushpakandam and Kuruvikanam near Ramakkalmedu are the second places in Kerala where wind power farms have been set up, though they are private holdings. At present the capacity of NEG MICON make wind mill is about 14.25 MW. This electricity is distributed to the Kerala State Electricity Board. However, Ramakkalmedu has huge power generation potential, as it is one of the largest wind-blown areas in Asia.
