Film Treatment Format
There is no magic formula for writing film treatment formats. Format the film treatment according to its intended audience. There are two main audiences, the audience who will ultimately see the film and the audience person or people who will initially judge its merits. In addition, the executive will seriously consider how well the audience will like the entire film.
The following elements are considered in the film treatment format:
• Font name and size, spacing
• Language
• Pagination
• Length of treatment
• Quotation marks
• Name of character
• Margin
• Binding
• The first page contains information
Font – Adopt an easy-to-read font in film treatment format. Most established producers prefer the Courier New, 12-point typeface, although Times New Roman or Arial will also suffice. Do not indent paragraphs just include a double space between them. Single spacing is used everywhere else.
Language – Use present tense and write in first person. Use strong words that carry full meaning. Make the reader feel like they are watching a trailer for the screenplay and not reading a treatment. Write in paragraphs as opposed to screenplays that follow a specific structure. The treatment reflects the tone of the script – be it humorous, romantic, ironic, etc. Each paragraph in the film treatment format needs to be short and light.
Page Numbering – The page number should appear as a heading in the upper right corner. The first page is unnumbered.
Length – Ideally a treatment should not exceed 15 pages in length. The accepted norm is 5-12 pages. These vary according to the type of treatment. A drama can be long while a comedy is short in length. It all depends on how many details you want to include which, in turn, depends on the purpose of the treatment
Quotation Marks – Unlike scripts, quotation marks are used to show dialogue in treatment.
Character Name – The first time a character name appears, it should be in all caps.
Margins – Like screenplays, this should be written on 81/2 x 11 inch, three-perforated paper in a film treatment format. Top and bottom margins vary between .5 – 1 inch, left margin 1.2 – 1.6 inch and right margin 5 – 1 inch. Extra inches on the left side give the print a balanced look. There are no hard and fast rules regarding margin.
Binding – Three holes are used for binding with brads.
Front Page – This should contain important information such as a title of the work, author name and contact information, WGA number, a log line and total page number.
Executives are busy so keep the treatment short and include only all the key points. Don’t go into unnecessary details. A few carefully chosen words will suffice to convey the story to these people. If you’re planning to use it as a road map or for a friend you want to involve, be as descriptive as possible without being too strict about following the rules set by the industry.
