The Impact of the Internet on Contemporary Literature
Literature is basically anything that is written. Anything from Homer’s earliest poems to today’s web pages can be considered literature. But for a specific meaning, there are different types of literature. Literature may be written in a particular language, such as English literature, or written by a particular culture, such as African literature. But literature really means more than the printed word, and the Internet is certainly a part of literature. I should note that the word literature comes from the French phrase belles-lettres, meaning “beautiful writing”. When a work is called literature, it is usually considered a great work of art. Internet literature does not necessarily mean that no one controls Internet literature. In the following article I am going to talk about the impact of the internet on literature today.
There are two main categories of literature that are also present on the Internet: fiction and nonfiction. Fiction is writing that a writer creates from imagination. Authors may include personal experiences, or information about real people or events, but they combine these events with imagined situations (Moran, 45). In non-Internet literature the project undergoes at least some form of censorship of what words may be used, yet allows Internet authors to put up and enjoy what they want on the Web. Most fiction is narrative writing, such as novels and short stories. Fiction also includes drama and poetry. Nonfiction is factual writing about real-life situations. Major forms of nonfiction include essays, biographies, autobiographies, and diaries (Browner, 90). The Internet presents a new form – the Internet page, or Internet book.
People read literature for different reasons. The most common reason for reading is pleasure. People read to pass the time or for information and knowledge. Through literature, people meet characters they can identify with and sometimes find solutions to their own problems. With literature, a person can often understand situations that they would not otherwise understand in real life (Koehler, 28). Often, the arrangement of words can be enjoyable, just as a child likes the words “Ring Around the Rosie,” even though they don’t understand what the words mean. Literature has four elements: character, plot, theme, and style. A good writer has the ability to balance these elements, creating a unified work of art. Characters form the central interest of many plays and novels as well as biographies and autobiographies. A writer must know each character thoroughly and have a clear idea of how each one looks, speaks and thinks. Creating Internet literature is not difficult due to the fact that Internet literature requires minimal start-up costs as opposed to “traditional” literature (Moran, 47). And since reading is usually associated with convenience, at some point one will not be surprised to see convenient electronic devices that can be transported anywhere and will download books from the Internet and present them in digital format.
Motivation causes characters to act. A good writer will make sure that a character’s motives are clear and logical. Internet writers don’t have to be this way, they aren’t regulated and they don’t risk anything by publishing online. Setting is where a character’s story takes place. The plot is built around a series of events that take place over a period of time. The same goes for the characters. There is no rule for the order in which the events are presented. A unified plot has a beginning, middle, and end. In literary terms, a cohesive plot includes a revelation, a rising action, a climax, and a denouement or denouement. The exposition gives the background and circumstances of the story (Browner, 93). Based on cumulative action display. It creates suspense, or the reader’s desire to find out what happens next. Climax is the highest point of interest, also the turning point of a story. Condemnation is the conclusion. Theme is the basic idea expressed by a work of literature. It develops from the interplay of characters and plot. A theme may contain a moral, warning the reader to a better life or a different way of living. Internet literature doesn’t have to be this way because no one controls it. The writing takes minimal risk in terms of investment, yet the possibility of finding readers from all over the world, who can pay for the e-book and download it to their own computer, is very high (Moran, 49).
A serious writer strives to make his work an honest expression of feelings or true emotions. They avoid emotionalism, which means overemphasizing emotions or pretending to feel emotions. A writer with honest emotions doesn’t need to tell the reader what to think about a story. A good story will lead the reader to the author’s conclusion. Style is the way a writer uses words to create literature. It is difficult to enjoy the characters or plot of a story without enjoying the author’s style (Browner, 98). A writer’s style is as important as what he is trying to say. Point of view, or the way a story is presented, is another part of style. A writer may tell a story in the first person, using the pronoun I, as if the narrator were a major or minor character in it. Or, the writer may use the third person mode, where the narrator stands apart from the characters and describes the action using pronouns such as he and she. There are two types of third person point of view: limited and omniscient. In third-person limited perspective, the narrator describes events as seen by a single character. In the third person omniscient, or all knowing, point of view, the narrator reports on the thoughts and feelings of various characters. Reading is a deliberate personal art. There are no definitive rules for judging a piece of writing. Often, a workman’s judgment may change as tastes and fashions change. Yet classics challenge readers’ imaginations and offer timeless advice. Shakespeare will probably still be popular a hundred years from now. That is the power of literature. Literature is timeless (Moran, 53).
It should be noted that literature can have many and varied values on an individual and it is the Internet that allows literary values to reach audiences without barriers. It all depends on the story and the value or moral issue the writer wants you, the reader, to get out of it. It was difficult to put into words the value that literature had on me. But to understand the value of literature, one must know the values and the definition of literature. Value has many meanings but two that are related (Browner, 102). A value of utility or importance to the owner and a principle, value, or quality considered worthwhile or desirable. Literature is a body of writing in prose or verse. Literature creates value because it is essentially an analysis of an experience or situation (Koehler, 30). I found each story worth different. Through Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn it showed me that one does not have to be civilized or conform to society’s ideas to be cultured or mature. With Huck Finn he ran away from everything considered civilized (Moran, 58). He had nothing and really wanted nothing. But at the same time he experiences living dangerously and matures. It made me value Huck’s adventure and accept it as my own. Huck demonstrates his maturity when he comments on how the king and duke trick the villagers into believing they are the dead man’s brother, and Huck says, “I never saw anything so despicable.” (Twain 163) Although the king and the duke committed a heinous act on the villagers he still felt sorry for them when they were tarred. “People can be terribly cruel to each other,” comments Huck. (Twain 225) In William Faulkner’s Barn Burning, it tells of a man named Abner Snopes who burns down barns when he is upset or mad. This was their way of getting back. “Burn Burning” has two very clear struggles (Browner, 105). Abner oppresses his family just as the upper class oppresses him. To me “Burn Burning” is based on misdirected anger. Which is basically happening these days. For example, a teenager and his parents have it, he leaves and now his anger is directed at anything in his path. “Burn Burning” has value in that it shows in life that people actually misdirect their anger. For example, there have been school shootings and bomb threats in the past few years (Koehler, 33). Just as Abner Snopes felt like an outsider to the upper class, so did the students who committed these violent acts. In “The Swimmer” it makes me appreciate life and what it brings. Because if you are not careful or you are not careful, it will pass you by without notice (Browner, 109). As for “everyday usage”, one of the daughters didn’t value who she was or who she was because she was looking for her history. which was within his reach.
In conclusion I would like to note that all the literature that colleges and universities assign their students to read comes at a great cost to society in terms of paper usage and time wasted (which involves going to libraries or bookstores, etc.). The ability to download internet and books online to a portable device will reduce costs, save trees and make people more efficient. I understand that as people in this society we take many things for granted. Literature has given me many experiences and situations so far and I enjoy holding the paper book in the evening to prepare for the next day, yet I do not protest against the use of digital technology to create digital books that will not only contribute. for efficiency but at low cost to society as a whole.
