What is the worst case scenario for bird flu or how bad can it get? A question I have always wanted answered. Well history is always the best teacher and we have had an excellent history teacher since 1918. The answer is the bird flu of 1918, and that teacher’s prediction. Aquatic bird flu is said to have actually started in China (the word is known) then somehow in Kansas not Europe. Isn’t it interesting? It began among US cavalry horses then transferred to American troops assigned to those mounts stationed in Kansas. These cavalry were sent to the battlefields of Europe to take part in the war. Some of these soldiers contracted the virus. The flu spread throughout the densely populated cities of Europe and then returned to America and did the same there. It ran its course in over a year and killed 40 to 50 million people.
In 1918 a large city like London had a million people. Today we have 10 plus million people in mega cities and very fast transport systems. Any new bird flu virus can travel among infected people around the world within days.
Why can’t modern medicine help us?
Until today’s bird flu virus is transformed into its human infectious form, no scientific steps can be taken to create a serum. Only then can science develop the serum and start producing large batches. It takes a considerable amount of time and fertile chicken eggs, and there aren’t many around. Modern science under optimal conditions takes at least 6 months, minimum. Remember as I said above, it takes days for the virus to travel around the world. So even if all the drug companies in the world made this serum, only a small portion of the world’s population would be protected. I hate to spoil the word, but the virus can mutate into other human infectious forms, and other serums must be developed.

History of olive leaves as herbal medicine

The ancient Egyptians may have been the first to put the olive leaf to practical use. They considered it a symbol of divine power, and in keeping with that belief, they extracted its oil and used it to mummify their kings. Also found in Egyptian and later cultures, and there is documentation that olive leaf was a great herbal remedy for fever (sounds like a viral infection to me).
Knowledge of the medicinal properties of the plant (Olea europaea) dates back to the early 1800s where it was used in liquid form as a highly effective treatment for malarial infections. According to the 1854 Pharmaceutical Journal of Provincial Transactions, pages 353 and 354(a), doctors at the time said that the properties of the plant, Olea europaea, deserved more extensive investigation.
In the early 1900s, a bitter compound called “Oleuropein” was found in the leaves of some olive trees. This compound was determined to be part of the olive tree’s strong immune system. In 1962, European researchers recorded that oleuropein had the ability to lower blood pressure in animals, increase coronary artery blood flow, alleviate arrhythmias, and prevent intestinal muscle spasms. A Dutch researcher found the chemical responsible for olive leaf’s healing powers to be elenolic acid, which has powerful antiviral, bacterial and antiparasitic properties.
Modern medicine discovered that olive leaf is a powerful medicine
In the late 60’s and early 70’s, The Upjohn Company’s test studies were published by The American Society for Microbiology of a new versatile monoterpene that they isolated from different parts of the olive tree. The compound is called calcium elonolate, a crystalline salt form of elonolic acid. When they tested this compound it was found to be virulent against all viruses that were tested. The compound works effectively at low concentrations without any harmful effects on host cell processes. It has been found to be extremely safe and non-toxic, even at high doses. Although it worked extremely well in-vitro, it failed in-vitro. When injected into the bloodstream, the compound rapidly binds to blood serum proteins and renders itself inactive. They could not overcome this problem and stopped their research. During this same period, other companies showed interest in the compound and conducted various tests, but lost interest. Then in 1990, interest was renewed and the process of bringing significant product olive leaf extract to market began.
A safety study on calcium elonolate was conducted in laboratory animals and published by The Upjohn Company in 1970. The study concluded that no toxic or other adverse side effects were observed even at doses several hundred times higher than the recommended dose.
Recent Australian studies show that liquid olive leaf extract made from fresh olive leaves contains 40 times more antioxidants than even the best extra virgin olive oil. This same fresh olive leaf extract has 5 times more antioxidant power than vitamin C, 28 times more antioxidant power than noni juice, and 6 times more than goji juice.

There are no negative side effects with olive leaf extract but it does have a healthy side effect called the Herxheimer or “die-off” effect. Here’s what happens during the die-off effect. There are germs or viruses in the body that somehow manage to evade the body’s immune system. These germs and viruses are destroyed after exposure to olive leaf tincture which is a good thing for the person. After germs die, their cell-wall proteins are absorbed through the fragile mucous membrane that surrounds them. The body recognizes them as toxins and initiates natural processes to get rid of them.
