Jason Seeley’s War – Book Review
“Jason Seeley’s War” centers on the heart of a small American town where two young men fall deeply in love, and have been since high school. Jason and Natalie’s love moves with a resilient energy that endures in his recovery from a horrific drug addiction. A very promising athlete and student, Jason is welcomed to the university, but Natalie won’t let him go without making him promise to be faithful to the love of his life. This promise he wanted to keep. But then the Vietnam War happened and Jason was assigned a draft number just before graduation. He knew government agents were going to collect.
Jason was forced to go against his patriotic upbringing as he refused to participate in a war he did not support. Now labeled a ‘draft dodger’, Jason is a fugitive in America and flees to Canada for his own safety. Fortunately, he stumbles upon an underground organization that tries to protect people like him from FBI agents. Jason eventually begins his dream of a new life as a history professor with the help of kind friends. However, he fears that this new dream will mean everything and leave the one he loves. Jason ‘Will he ever be with Natalie again?’ This question haunts me day and night.
I felt that Dean Salter did a great job portraying this aspect of war. How this young man ran from a war he couldn’t believe, tearing families apart. The community is torn in their perception of this ‘criminal’ among them. New customs, new friends to somehow try to adapt to, he grew up confused without people. Betrayals and accusations create miscommunication and a rift begins in her family that can never be mended. Strangers along the way help as best they can at the time, not fully realizing their little helper is a turning point for this young man’s journey. This is an aspect of the war story that is rarely told so clearly.
