Thinking About Homeschooling? Teachers Are
One might be surprised to learn that professional teachers are the most frequent arrivals in the home school arena. The reasons they give are very interesting.
- In the 60s teachers had more to say about what happened in their classrooms. But at present the government has more control. It is important to know that the Vietnam War taught us that wars cannot be won from the White House. Similarly, the teacher, who is in the trenches (figuratively speaking) knows what his children need. Unlike bureaucrats, he sees them as people, not as statistics. School lunches were better in the 60s.
- Teachers rightly complain that they now have to teach their children to pass government mandated exams at the expense of teaching them the basics.
- Class sizes have become so large that children are taught to act like robots rather than individuals. Teachers are forced to teach as if one size fits all…they are less able to individualize their curriculum.
- Recess and play time are being reduced. Many teachers complain that this is creating stress and forcing children to settle into unhealthy and unnatural patterns.
Teachers are getting an uncomfortable wrap when they are blamed for the growing decline of the US public school system, and few people are listening to “those in the trenches.” Government bureaucracy is more likely to be responsible for this. Is it any wonder that so many teachers are choosing to home school their own families?
Most home school students outperform public school kids on college entrance exams. Obviously most parents are doing something right whether they have teaching credentials or not.
Are there any sad stories about children not receiving adequate education in home school settings? The answer is yes, but there are more stories like this in the public school system. Government intervention is not a solution. Parent awareness and involvement (“those in the trenches”) solutions. This is the case whether the child is home schooled or in the public school system.
This is not meant to be an impossible burden or even to place blame on parents. I say this to empower parents. Today’s education solutions are significantly coming from you, the people.
