Types of Subplots – Novels
Many types of subplots are used in novels. Some types of subplots include romantic subplots, political, macabre, artistic/environmental subplots, historical subplots, pathos subplots, and character subplots. A subplot is a small story told throughout part or all of the main plot. There is no limit to how many subplots there can be, but there is a limit to how well the writers can sustain such plots. There are a few key subplots that almost every story uses.
Romantic subplot
These are subplots that provide great filler moments throughout a novel, especially when you’re experiencing writer’s block. Romantic subplots can be duplicate plots of other romantic scenes, which is why they’re great additions to the main plot when you’re having trouble moving on.
Political subplot
Almost every book uses this game of politics in their story. The only novels that can’t use it are for a reading age that is too young to understand the complexities. These subplots are great for filling in big gaps if you’re having a hard time connecting parts of the main plot.
In a political subplot, a character explores the politics or social situation of their environment. This can range from how fearfully a teenage parent reacts to a situation to a war room gathering where everyone discusses what could happen. While politics usually means dealing with some form of government, political subplots deal with environmental hierarchy.
Macabre subplot
You know how a show repeats the same plot line during a mysterious investigation, or how a novel spends useless time describing a bad guy’s motives? It’s a macabre subplot, and it tends to be quite effective at the beginning of fantasy novels. Good examples of novels that begin with macabre sub-plots are JR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and JK Rowling’s Harry Potter.
Harry Potter even maintains the macabre sub-plot and brings it into the main plot.
A macabre subplot carries its own story in horror fiction, but is useful for one aspect of the main plot. This is not to say that a description of how the killer killed a victim is a subplot, but if that description is used to distinguish between two different killers, the description becomes a macabre subplot.
Industrial/environmental subplot
These sub-plots are very unique because they treat the environment as if it has a story of its own. These sub-plots are very difficult to create, even difficult to maintain. They need an artistically tuned mind to narrate that the environment has a story of its own. The sub-plot may be so subtle that the reader doesn’t notice.
Historical subplot
These subplots are extremely short and useful when bringing in a new character that wasn’t usually there. These subplots refer to something that has already happened but the reader is unaware of it. Most of the time, the historical subplot is introduced two hours earlier or later using sound. These subplots are often deeply intertwined with the main plot.
Thought path subplot
When you have nothing to write about and when all other subplots seem pointless, the Path of Thought subplot is your savior. This is where you take the reader’s attention away from the storyline to explore a character’s thought process of everything that is happening or will happen.
Character subplot
It is extremely difficult to maintain these subplots without losing focus on the main character. They are usually found in stories that use the past tense of a supporting character to describe actions that would otherwise be illogical. A character subplot is a small back story of a character or a secondary main plot that is heavily intertwined with the main plot, such as a mother’s perspective and a daughter’s perspective.
