It was a make-believe business that was supposed to help him learn a new skill. He created a web page for his fantasy farm, took some photos of the tumbleweeds growing in his front yard, wrote some mock product descriptions, and set up an online shopping cart to process credit cards. It’s all just for fun… until he starts getting orders. Many orders! An average of about 15 orders start per week.

Now, 14 years later, Linda’s online enterprise generates more than its annual income from an average nine-to-five worker. He never leaves home and his shop is open 24 hours a day. Anyone in the world can browse its inventory and place orders. Scientists, horticulturists, NASA engineers and wild-west enthusiasts can just point and click. The money they spend is deposited directly into his bank account. Whenever an order comes through his website, he walks out his front door, grabs a large dry tumbleweed, stuffs it into a box and waits for the UPS truck to arrive. (They come straight to his house to pick up the packages.)

Today, employees of Prairie Tumbleweed Farm are many of Linda’s relatives who all share in the profits. And the whole remarkable business was entirely unintentional.
