Public Speaking 101 – What Makes a Good Speaker – Part II
Before I start, I would add that this topic “what makes a good speaker” appears to be a popular one based on the result of a global search engine. This just shows that we have many good speakers around who are constantly looking for different ways to improve their skill. This is a good sign because I truly believe that the world needs better speakers to deliver their messages and make a difference in the lives of the other people.
I hope you have picked up some useful insights in Part I of this series. Let’s continue our discussion of this topic in Part II.
Better Storyteller
In case you wonder why a speaker is a storyteller, it is because it is more difficult for a speaker to deliver his message to his participants in abstract. This is especially the case if the participants prefer Sensing in gathering information. Based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (“MBTI”), a person with a S-type personality prefers to take in information that is real and tangible. Stories will be useful.
Although a good speaker is a storyteller, he tends to forget to do proper research of his participants’ profile before the training. He may also not be aware of the cultural differences between his hometown and the place where he conducts the training. Consequently, the stories he uses may not create any significant impact as originally anticipated. Let me give you an example.
I have seen speakers from the US who conducted seminars in Singapore. Some of them applied this technique but the stories they used were very US-centric. In other words, a participant who does not live in the US may not feel any significant impact after hearing such stories. What makes the matter worse is that the speaker had a good laugh of his own stories. He thought that his participants would follow but in reality, the participants did not laugh at all. In part I, I talked about the importance of building rapport with the participants. This incident would clearly result in a break of the rapport with the participants instantly.
How about a better speaker? What will he do? He will carefully research the participants’ profile before the training and will select those stories that are well-known internationally. For example, in personal development training, I will frequently hear the story of Steve Jobs and his famous Commencement Speech delivered at Stanford in 2005. In a business training, I will often hear the story of Sam Walton as to how he built his “Walmart” Empire.
As you can see, a speaker can use stories from his howntown but he has to make sure that these stories are well-known internationally. Likewise, if I am going to conduct a training in the US, I will not share a story about my experience in a hawker centre at Hougang. In the first place, how many people from the US know where Hougang is? By the way, Hougang is a suburb in the north-eastern area of Singapore.
Better time manager
A good speaker manages his time but tends not to enforce it strictly. Here is the problem. Let’s say it is time for a break. A good speaker will tell his participants to have a break for 10 minutes. However, he allows the participants to come late. As a result, the training will be behind the schedule. According to the MBTI, participants with a Judging preference will not be impressed with a training that is behind time.
A better speaker in the same situation will let his participants know that the break is 10 minutes but he will seek his participants’ agreement to follow the rules strictly because there will be consequences for any breach of these rules. For example, the training room will be closed after 10 minutes and any latecomer will have to pay a fine before he is allowed to enter the room. The fine will be doubled or tripled if the breach is repeated. In this way, participants with a Judging preference will come back to the training room on time. Participants with a Perceiving preference will make the effort to come back to the training room on time too because they will feel the pain if they are late. The training can continue based on the original schedule and it is a win-win to everyone in the training room. How many of you know what I am talking about?
