An Interesting Anthropology & Emotional Read – Manouche: Living With The Gypsies of France
It is with great pleasure that I set aside this time to provide this short review/introduction for a book that I just finished reading over the weekend. I’m not often one to leave book reviews, but in this case I felt compelled to share the joy, emotional connection, and learning I experienced. It never ceases to amaze me, how thought provoking and fascinating reading a book can be; And in this case, I must preach that this natural feeling of contentment and pride in having made good use of my leisure time, has increased more than once. The book I’m referring to is titled: ‘Manouche: Living with the Gypsies of France’ and is an expertly written and crafted personal account from debut author: Nigel Parsons.
The story being told gives a great, fascinating insight into what it was like to live as a gypsy in France, starting in the 1970s, when Nigel was working in a gypsy temporary settlement as well as picking grapes. The French family employing Nigel warned him several times to stay away from the Manoche, but the warnings fell on deaf ears – he already had warm and inviting relations with the 5 Gypsy families living nearby. Late night campfires, music and dancing had already won over Nigel’s loyalty. The end of the grape harvest always brings a large, harvest feast to the end and a great time to celebrate. On this occasion though, surprisingly Nigel found out that all 5 gypsy families were banned from this particular end of the harvest. The gypsies disappeared overnight and Nigel soon followed.
The story that follows spans 40 years and brings with it many highs and lows. Great friendships are formed for life when cultures and ways of life are destroyed and lost in what can be a very cruel world at times. Nigel Parsons recalls the time he spent with the Gypsies as one of the best and happiest days of his life. Gypsy families had and have very little in the eyes of most, but these tended to be more materialistic items in their lives. Reading Munch: Living with the Gypsies of France goes a long way towards re-affirming to myself/the reader that there is more to life than a variety of objects and things. The connection one person can have with another can be much stronger and more purposeful.
Nigel Parsons now lives in South West London with his family, and looks back on those heady years of the 1970s with an affection you can’t for the items.
