How to Write Creative Non-fiction
Creative nonfiction is nonfiction that uses creative writing techniques, especially techniques in both literary and popular nonfiction. These well-established techniques help generate more interest and marketability than traditional “just facts” nonfiction. Here are some tricks derived from fiction:
the person
The first person is usually used because it helps bring the articles to life and gives them a sense of voice and readability. First person also adds color and detail, including a person’s senses and thought processes. The setting and locale also become personalized. It helps the reader identify with the narrative.
Although the first person is usually preferred, some creative nonfiction may also use the second person–“you” to help personalize it–and the traditional third person, but using fictional narration in a nonfiction format.
point of view
Most creative nonfiction doesn’t pretend to be “objective” in the journalistic sense—although “real journalism” isn’t really objective. Creative nonfiction writers often express their own and others’ opinions and can alternate freely between objectivity and subjectivity when necessary. They “reveal themselves.” Others freely “express themselves.”
the dialogue
Dialogue is often used to introduce topics and significant details and continue freedom of expression. It adds to the general interest, and transitions between narrative and discourse found in fiction, which add rhythm and pace not found in traditional nonfiction.
Flashback
This technique can be used to add details from the past and explain the present in the narrative. The same techniques of transition are used in fiction, and the same kind of transition words, or flashback, are achieved simply by skipping lines and using periods, as in some fiction. Techniques used in modern film language can also be applied here to scene-to-scene transitions, including flashback scenes.
scene-making
Fiction-like scenes are often used and dialogue-like techniques are integrated into the narration. There are also different kinds of scenes, as Henry James might say, “dramatization, dramatization, dramatization.”
characterization
Characters and character development techniques found in fiction can be applied to real people. How they are introduced, how they are described, their dialogue etc. Introducing real people in the setting of fictional characterization, again, helps add interest and personalization to nonfiction.
description
Although narrative detail is certainly found in nonfiction, nonfiction can also study pointers from fiction, the type of concrete narrative detail, how it integrates with the scene, the rhythm and personality of the setting, the different types of narrative.
So, before writing nonfiction, read and reread your favorite works of fiction, the best literary and popular texts, take notes, and even read how to write nonfiction along with how to write fiction. How you can integrate the techniques of both to write the most interesting and wonderful nonfiction.
