Interview With Maha Al Musa – Author of Dance of the Womb

will give– First of all hearty congratulations to you for writing and publishing your book and for winning the gold award at the Living Now Independent Book Publishers Award, when did you think of writing on this particular topic.

Maha Al Musa– Thank you very much for your congratulations.

I had been teaching belly dancing as a prenatal exercise for about four years when we were on a family vacation in Western Samoa in 2000 with my two sons who were then 1 and 4. One morning I was sitting on the beach chatting with another woman traveler telling her how I facilitated a belly dance for pregnancy class and how I connected the dance with my Middle Eastern roots. We talked about culture, my experience growing up in the West from Eastern culture, the significance of belly dance to Arabs and my Muslim background on my father’s side, etc. I mentioned that for me belly dance represents the same poetics of expression – East meets West and life experience and how I connect it to my teaching of pregnant women about birth and how powerful our personal stories can be when we allow ourselves to fully embrace life’s experiences. allow He returned with all sincerity and said

“You must write about this! And share your insight and knowledge with all the women of the world! Women must hear about this and women must be empowered around natural birth as we need to overcome the fear of birth in this modern day”

I said, “That’s my job and bellydance has the potential to bring women into a place of safety and autonomy in childbirth!”

A month later once we got home I thought this lady was right I had to write!!!

And so I started my book in 2001.

will give– You add your personal memories to each chapter, there are some very honest statements about finding your mother and growing up as an immigrant in Australia, do you connect the events spiritually and emotionally with your personal journey to motherhood.

Maha Al Musa– Yes I cannot separate my experience as a first generation immigrant (even though I was only two years old when I arrived in Australia) from my emotional and spiritual world and life as a mother. Motherhood is an extension of who I am and what I do! Who am I without my stories, beliefs, culture, upbringing, experiences of being ethnic in Australia etc?

I invite all women to reflect on, acknowledge and balance their own life stories within the deeply moving experiences of birth and motherhood, both positive and negative. Most importantly accepting ourselves as spiritually integrated women regardless of caste, caste or creed.

will give– It was interesting to read about the breakdown of belly dance movements and interpretations as a tool for prenatal and birth. Do people in the Middle East still use birth preparation techniques like you described?

great Al Musa– As mentioned in my book, Dance of the Womb, I did quite a bit of research on whether women in the Middle East use belly dance as a birth dance today – this information was extremely difficult to access especially with what is written. There are some Egyptian hieroglyphics that depict women squatting and being attended to by women in the past – it seems to me that modern Arab women today have lost some of this knowledge and may actually see traditional, indigenous practices as primitive. They too embrace the so-called wonders of technology. I want my work to go back to the Arab world and re-educate women on what we have lost culturally in terms of natural birth.

will give– One of the main aspects of belly dance is viewed negatively by the general public and often misinterpreted as somehow sexual, how do you as an educator and teacher deal with this complex situation with the general public?

Maha Al Musa– I understand that the element of “sexuality” is strongly represented in people’s view of bellydance…and in the audience’s perception of some dancers as well as the dance itself..My work with pregnant women takes belly dancing to another level (although in reality pregnancy arises from a sexual act. ) – We cannot deny that birth is an extension of our sexual experience as women but my work – as it is taught and presented in the Al Musa Method – is much more of a spiritual practice that supports this most powerful feminine experience with purpose. Bellydance birth helps women connect with their bodies rather than purely sexual in nature, so that women can birth consciously and hopefully work towards a fearless birth…

So we can say belly dance has its roots in a woman’s sexuality (pregnancy) and can then be expressed through childbirth, reflecting the power and autonomy – qualities that have been lost in the commercialization and medicalization of birth – for the general public once they begin. To understand and hope that the belly dance experience in this form will fully understand and embrace its incredible gift to women in prenatal exercise and birthing….I think I want to revive its powerful other nature in mainstream birthing!

will give– You have also complimented your book with a DVD release, what can our readers expect from the DVD? Do you see in the present day scenario that visual presentation has more impact on people than reading a book?

Maha Al Musa– My DVD, Dance of the Womb, follows on from the book of the same name This basically brings the book “to life”….women can now easily follow me through the dance practice as if they were in an intimate, nurturing space and held them with ease and grace through their pregnancy. I definitely feel that the visual presentation through a DVD format not only represents an idea of my teaching and presentation style but is also a wonderful way for women to connect with their bodies and their babies. I think that reading also has its merits and writing about dance in print must have been a challenge! I embellished the concept by interjecting bellydance into the birth movement to give my personal story a deeper, more intimate backdrop. I think it works very well as a writer…an ongoing experience!

So hand in hand the book and the DVD are wonderful resources – in the book you get to know me and my story and in the DVD we get to share it together…..and it’s also a rare event to see a woman 46 naturally pregnant and giving birth naturally.

I guess my words dance!!

will give– Going back to your book, you talk about the evolving nature of belly dance. The Middle East is a part of the new economic and cultural globalization, how do you see the general public’s view of belly dance in the next 20 years, especially in the West.

Maha Al Musa – As mentioned for me personally, I hope to be a part of the new wave of seeing the art form of Belly Dance in a new perspective…..often the traditional art form gets a new lease on life as we see it when it is embraced by the West. Let’s take a different perspective…though I think it’s always important to respect and acknowledge the roots and origins of the information used so it doesn’t lose meaning and expression too much. It’s a very fine line to walk…..and the idea of who owns the culture is an interesting question…shall we ask who owns the earth? Humanity?

Respect, respect, respect is very important to me….recognizing the rich history and culture of the Middle East and the incredible gifts this part of the world has given over the past thousands of years – from algebra to medicine to belly dance to birth!!

will give – Thank you very much for your time and patience maha. I am sure our readers will enjoy your interview and we wish you success for the future.
