Review – David Attenborough’s First Life
A Review of the Book – “The First Life”
Designed to accompany the two-part television series, “David Attenborough’s First Life” spans billions of years, leading to the development of advanced life on our planet. It is a chronological journal, divided into eleven chapters that tell the story of the “slow-burning fuse” that led to the explosion of life in the Cambrian, the development of the file of organisms that we still have today.
The text is informative, not too technical and designed for the layman to follow. There are many great photographs and lots of information on the fossil sites, although it would have been interesting to read more about some of the fossil sites in the UK, such as Crail in Scotland, and perhaps less scary animals for children to enjoy. However, it is amazing to see the weird and wonderful animals known as Ediacaran fauna (soft-bodied, exotic creatures). By the late Precambrian, about 600 million years ago, simple food chains were established, with more than thirty different genera recognized, this simple ecosystem is known as the Ediacaran fauna after the Ediacara Mountains north of Adelaide, South Australia, where a variety of Precambrian fossils were discovered in the late 1940s.
The introduction by Sir David Attenborough really captures his passion for fossils and fossil collecting. A highlight of the book was reading about Sir David’s own connection with Charnwood Forest, the site in Leicestershire, Sir David’s childhood county, where the important Precambrian fossil Charnia (Charnea mesoni) were discovered.
“First Life” – Appropriate and informative content
At over 285 pages in length, this book provides a perfect balance between academic content and computer-generated wonder. One of the highlights of this book is the extreme close-up photographs of important fossils. Most fossils from the Precambrian and Cambrian geologic periods are extremely small, but highly magnified and full-color photographs help bring the fossil evidence “to life.” Images of primitive seascapes and some excellent computer impressions and graphics have produced what the fauna and flora of the Burgess Shale site (British Columbia, Canada) might have looked like.
David Attenborough’s first life book in brief
So in summary, a good book, an interesting read, perhaps not ideally suited for children but a fitting tribute to the scientists’ work and Sir David.
