The Awakening – A Fictional Short Story From a Woman’s Perspective – Written by a Man
When will the day come when you wake up and look in the mirror to see a stranger staring back at you? The day you once saw yourself, never look back in the mirror? Does it slowly creep up on you or do you wake up one day to find a stranger staring back at you? For me, I guess, it was a gradual process, I didn’t really catch the symptoms. That is, until the day I looked at my partners face before he woke up in the morning thinking to myself, “when did he start getting old”. Did he look as young as the day we met, not even a month ago, or longer? The face of the love of my life has been taken away? That’s when I realized, oh my, I wonder how many mornings he’s been watching while I’m sleeping and thinking the exact same thing.
I quickly jumped out of bed, made a mad dash to the bathroom, and turned on the light to meet the same look I saw on my partner’s face. I was shocked, to say the least, but how could I be surprised? I mean, really, I didn’t give my skin a second thought. I always thought it was something old people should do and although 45 years old and feeling only a few days old, I have yet to destroy myself to the cane. However, staring back at me in my own mirror was a woman who looked every bit her age and more. I have to do something and do it fast. Age was not treating me well.
I realized right away that I should have listened to my mom when she warned me that getting all golden tans wasn’t just cracking, but it gave me confidence when I was sporting the darkest color in the room. I should have listened to her when she told me, especially women should take care of her skin and have her own skin care routine. For as long as I can remember she was doing all the exfoliating and revitalizing I thought was silly. A waste of time, something I don’t need to concern myself with until I’m older, and a lot at that. Today my mother can say to me, “I told you so!”
I’ve watched my mom over the years, since I was little, wash her face every day, moisturize and do various other things with it. Now I sit, wracking my brain, trying to remember what he was doing. She would perform her morning and evening rituals and talk to me about women and responsibilities, explaining what she was doing and I can’t remember for the life of me what she said, our skin is a gift and we should. Consider it as such. That it was God’s natural armor and we should treat it as natural, loving and gentle. However, what I definitely saw didn’t look normal to me, the goop she was applying and scrubbing she did. Then I remembered her face at our traditional Sunday dinner last week. He never looked over 50 a day in his ripe old age of 72 and here I am looking over 60 at just 45. Since when did you start to see me big mother?
I rummaged through my bathroom closet looking for something that remotely looked like it was going to turn back time and make my face look fresh and young again and pulled out a few items I had bought after seeing ads on TV. Some cream for my under eyes for that night I woke up a little late and got bags and circles under them as well as a fancy little bottle of some face cream that who knows what to do with. It was so long ago that I bought it, I totally forgot I even had it, however, both were advertised on TV during primetime, so they had to work, I thought to myself. So, I quickly wash my face in the shower with my usual shower gel and proceed to dress and dab like my mom does my eye cream and moisturizer. I throw on my makeup to disguise my age before my partner wakes up. Now, at least looking alive, and nowhere near as bad as I did when I first took the plunge, I made a mental note to set up a lunch date with my mom, it was time for us to “talk”, discuss skin care. .
I wake my husband up and he’s none the wiser to the death of my face, or at least he’s being polite enough not to mention it. I believe the latter is true. I consider telling him something, but, he’s a manly man, I doubt he cares nearly as much as I do that he’s unknowingly aged on him. I never remember my father messing with his face; However, it wasn’t like I sat in the bathroom with my father while he got ready for work or before he retired for the evening. Made a mental note to ask my mom if dad also had a secret skincare routine, as my husband now looked my dad’s age and only 5 years my age.
Lunch date with mom. . .
The first words out of my mother’s mouth were, “Elizabeth, I warned you. You never listened to me, did you? I tried to set a good example for you. Why do you think I would have talked to you about my skin care?” routine?” I humbly reply “I know now mom and I wish I’d listened, but I just thought…” and my voice trails off knowing I’ve beaten not only my mom, but my skin too. My mom went on to tell me about my skin, how it’s the largest organ in my body and works the same way as my liver and kidneys. No way, it’s just skin, it’s not inside me, surely it’s my moms “scared skin care straight” routine. However, this time I didn’t just zone out on her like I had in the past, I listened and the more she talked the more she understood. I was relieved when she told me that it wasn’t too late, that there was still hope for me, even though I would never look as great as her (her cute little I told you) that I could reverse some of those signs of aging.
My mom went to talk to me about natural vs. chemical and what I put in my mouth today was not the right method. He told me not to feel bad though, that many people see the hype on TV and assume that since it’s on TV it must work. She told me that if I didn’t want my skin to rebel against me anymore, to ditch chemical based skin care products and buy only products with natural ingredients. She told me that the first step in my skincare routine was to make an appointment at her spa and get a full spa facial. He urged me to listen to the aesthetician. I asked my mom what products she uses and she wrote down some of her favorites, which are made with lycopene, this amazing natural hydrator, and told me her spa sold them so I wouldn’t leave without them. I promised him I wouldn’t. I knew I needed help, and needed it fast.
Before leaving my insightful lunch date with my beautiful mother, I asked her, “Mom, does Dad do anything?” Mother replied “Do you mean what does your father do? Of course he does a lot”. “No, mom”, I said, “I mean looking young. He still looks so beautiful and good…” “Oh, you mean does your dad have a skin care routine. Yes honey, actually he does,” she said. said “She’ll never admit it you don’t mind,” she said, “but men can be as vain as women sweeties. Why do you ask?” When I woke up I told my mother about my revelation about my husband’s face and how it made me realize that I too had grown old somewhere along the way, and I wondered how she would react if I mentioned it to her or if there was. A good method.
My mom, in all her wisdom, went on to tell me how she got my dad to start a regular skin care routine without really giving it a second thought or questioning him. Mom said she just started adding products to the bathroom counter that were 100% natural skin care products so she would have them readily available if she chose to use them. She said that one morning during their usual coffee, my father commented on how beautiful my mother’s skin was. Mom said she thanked him but also said she had skincare to thank him for. The next thing she knew she said her supplies were slowly dwindling faster than ever and she was starting to see her husband getting smaller before her eyes. No word usage was ever discussed, it’s just a given that my mom now buys for two instead of herself when choosing her skincare. My next stop on my agenda is to get myself a facial at my mom’s spa, pick up some natural skincare for my husband and I, and start my life anew with a younger look.
