Vampires in the Media
It seems that vampires are everywhere in the media today, from books and movies to advertisements; You name it. It was recently found that since the beginning of the first quarter in 2009, one out of every seven books purchased has been a vampire book. It’s amazing how dependent our society’s interests are on movies and literature.
Although stories of vampires have been around for countless centuries now, they have never been as popular as they have become in our present day, although the descriptions and views of what vampires are have dramatically changed over the years. What was once a demonic and evil bloodsucking creature of the night, has now become primarily romance and supernatural powers.
Interest in the subject has grown dramatically only this year due to the overwhelming response to one of the best vampire movies ever made; Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Stephanie first published the first book in the Twilight Saga, Twilight, in 2005 and has become one of the most promising new authors thanks to the release of this wonderful series. I have personally read the entire series so far and am totally impressed with Stephanie’s ability to capture her audience with her vision of the most romantic and mysterious creature ever; Vampires If you haven’t had a chance to read the Twilight Saga, I highly recommend picking up a copy at your local bookstore if you have any interest in vampires at all because you will not be disappointed in the world Stephanie has created for her. the reader
The Twilight novel became a worldwide box office hit in late 2008 when it was made into a Hollywood film directed by Catherine Hardwicke and produced by Summit Entertainment. The movie stars Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen and Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, and doesn’t even include DVD sales.
A sequel to the story, “New Moon” is scheduled to hit theaters on November 20, 2009. I personally hope that the sequel will be bigger than the release of the first movie “Twilight” which created a huge response. With the current filming of New Moon. Fortunately for Twilight fans, the current actors are all signed on for all the movies in the Twilight film series. A third film based on the Eclipse novels in the series is scheduled for release in June 2010; The sequel New Moon was released not long after. The fourth and final film in the book series so far, Breaking Dawn, is not yet scheduled for release until sometime in 2013 but I will keep everyone updated as new information comes to light.
In addition to vampire writers like Stephenie Meyer, there is one author who captivated her audience in the same way with the publication of “The Vampire Chronicles” which was published in 1976 and continued with the publication of the series which culminated in the final book of the series, “Blood Canticle” in 2003. Anne Rice is one of the few talented vampire novel writers who has consistently managed to captivate her audience with the unique twists and turns that are depicted in each book. This series of ten novels.
Ann due to the high praise for the first book in the series; “Interview with a Vampire”, Hollywood decided to make a film based on the book starring Tom Cruise as Lestat, Brad Pitt as Louis and Kirsten Dunst as Claudia. The movie quickly became a huge hit at the box office and helped rekindle interest in vampires. Of course, the sequel to “The Vampire Lestat” series was of course followed by the Interview with a Vampire film, titled “Queen of the Damned” starring Stuart Townsend as Lestat the Vampire and Alia Aksha as the Queen of the Damned. Both films carry with them a different version of the Lestat character as well as different actors for the character’s role. Nevertheless I enjoyed both films and hope that one day soon another film from his Vampire Chronicles series will be made that will captivate audiences as much as his books.
We’ve talked about authors Stephenie Meyer and Anne Rice so far, but I have yet to mention one of the earliest vampire novelists, Bram Stoker, who wrote the world famous book “Dracula” published in 1897. This novel was the main factor responsible for the massive popularity of vampires and has been the inspiration for many vampire films and novels today. In Bram Stoker’s Dracula, he creates a series of diaries and letters, as the story is told throughout the book. Although the book did not immediately top the readership charts, the novel eventually took off and has been remade into several films today; The most recent is Bram Stoker’s Dracula starring Keanu Reeves which was published in 1992, nearly a hundred years after the novel was published. Like the other vampire novel series we’ve discussed, Dracula also has a sequel titled “The Un-Dead,” which was actually written by Bram Stoker’s great-grandson, Dacre Stoker. The novel is not yet published but is currently in the works, as well as a film based on the novel which is scheduled to begin filming in June 2009 with a release date that has not been revealed at this time so keep checking back for more information on this.
You see, vampires have made quite a name for themselves in history that carries over to movies and literature today and captivates audiences with pure magic and lust for their powers and abilities. While it’s mind-blowing to take in the views and recreations of all these wonderful writers and producers of classic vampires, it’s important to understand that these things are only created as fictional entertainment.
