International Cultural Exchange

International Cultural Exchange (ICE) is commonly understood when people from one country visit another country to learn about a new culture while showcasing their own culture.

A regular practice with schools and youth organizations around the world is to send a handful of students/youths from their region to another country and allow them to live with local locals. Once students live in a home of a completely different culture, they can understand and learn about a new culture. Recently, I had a friend’s daughter from Singapore who was selected for ICE, and sent to Hong Kong. He had to choose a local family to stay with for a few days. It’s hard to guess how much he learned about Hong Kong culture in those two days.

Have you ever heard of teaching dance to people of different languages and countries? Well, not many had the opportunity to hear or see such feats. Here is a true story of a dancer from Visakhapatnam in South India.

I have been living in Hong Kong for almost a decade now, and have always attended Indian cultural events/festivals, orangetrams or dance shows conducted by Indian dancers and their Indian students. But recently, I was surprised to find a young enthusiastic and enthusiastic Kuchipudi dancer who works for a reputed yoga center and teaches Bollywood and other Indian dances including the classical dance Kuchipudi.

He is a person full of passion for dance and wanted to do more than what he was assigned to do. So he took the initiative to teach the traditional dance Kuchipuri at this yoga center. Initially, there were very few students, but the love and passion for dance reached new heights among them and many more started learning Kuchipudi dance. And today there are hundreds of students. The most surprising fact is that not all students understand or speak Chinese and the language – Kuchipudi songs are Telugu.

To encourage his students to learn more, he started conducting the ceremony in a traditional manner with all the clothes and ornaments. This amazing, passionate dancer and choreographer is Hari Eranki, who is addressed as Master Hari Om by all his students. Master Hari Om is one of those rare dance masters who can perform both traditional and modern dance simultaneously. He has trained and taught several dancers in Hong Kong with complete dedication and passion which is found in the dance of all his students who dance to the best of their soul and to be happy. His students are also now performing professionally. Her work as a dancer, choreographer and dance master speaks volumes for her talent, love and passion for dance and her students.

Iranian Srihari Baladitya was born to Prof. Late E. Nagamamba and ES Murthy belong to a family of musicians and dancers. Under the skillful guidance of legendary Guru Sri Pashumarthi Sitaramya, an exponent of Kuchipuri dance, Hari Om started learning Kuchipuri at the age of 3 and started performing at the age of 5. His most prestigious achievements include his participation in 1994 and 1995. International Kuchipudi Dance Festival in Mumbai and Hyderabad respectively with Swapna Sundari, Meenakshi Seshadri and other such great dance contestants. He also won a scholarship from the Center for Cultural Resources and Training, New Delhi to study Kuchipudi for 8 years. Subsequently, she obtained a diploma in Kuchipuri dance from Telugu University, Hyderabad in 1995.

Hari Om showed interest in learning Kuchipudi in various traditions such as Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, Pashumati tradition from Visakhapatnam and Vempati tradition under Smt. Bala Kondala Rao and Sri Hari Ram Murthy for 3 years. She also learned Bharat Natyam from Sri. A. Rukmaji Rao received a certificate in Andhra Natyam and Perini Siva Tandavam from Sri Nataraj Parameswaran for a few years from 1991 and from 1986 and a certificate in Mridangam from Telugu University, Hyderabad in 1999. At the very young age of 14, her mother started a music and dance school called Sri Gauthami Kala Vihar.

Hari was invited to work at a yoga center in Hong Kong in 2003 where he became a trendsetter in Kuchipudi, a semi-classical Indian dance and Bollywood style. Her popularity as a teacher prompted all other yoga centers to offer classes in this type of dance, and all forms of Indian dance were very popular in Hong Kong. Apart from being a trendsetter of Indian dance in Hong Kong, Hari has carved a niche for herself among the many dance teachers in Hong Kong and organizes various programs and events. The fact that he can equally teach and choreograph both classical and modern/bollywood dance forms has earned him a special place in the hearts of his students.

Chinese students have developed a passion for learning Telugu, as it is their master Hari Om’s mother tongue and Kuchipudi songs are in Telugu. My teaching experience with them has been very enthusiastic and lively, and proud to say that within a few lessons, they have already started speaking a few words and sentences. It is an amazing experience, which has no words…

Another classical dancer master Rajendra R. Nathy is another popular teacher in Hong Kong. He is an internationally acclaimed artist in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi and Bollywood dance as well. He holds a First Class Master’s Degree in Performing Arts and is a recipient of JRF and National Scholarships for Outstanding Young Artistes by the Government of India. He has served as the Head of the Department of Dance in several well-established universities in India. He has traveled extensively in Europe, UK, USA, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China and many countries in Asia.

Master Rajendra has established “Natya Yoga” a cultural organization engaged with the desire to serve and promote Indian classical and other art forms to the world. He also inspired students and audiences from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Her dances are soulful, expressive, full of grace, aesthetically pleasing.

As a seasonal harvest festival known as Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh, he started celebrating Sankranti since 2008, where his students perform classical, semi-classical and other dances directed only by him. She is a great trendsetter for all dancers and also sets a wonderful example of international cultural exchange. Hong Kong Telugu Samakhya is proud to have Hari Eranki and Rajendra R. Naathi, both exceptional classical dancers.
