Text-Based Games: The Role-Playing Stereotypes
I found when I was much younger it was quite easy to get involved in games like Dungeons and Dragons where your character has a background that you create and they are as customizable as you want. I found it extremely easy to slip into a roleplaying stereotype.
One day I spent a lot of time going through the background and history of people texting games and found the most common ones to date (note that many people don’t stick to a roleplay originally set for their character.) They are:
Abandoned by parents
This classic roleplay type dramatizes the story of them being abandoned by a member of their family. This is not to say that only their mother/father will be tyrants, but they are the most common. Father had to go to war and never came back, while mother wandered the streets to feed all the hungry mouths and never came back. It makes the perfect introduction for a typical loner, trust-nobody character type. This is a pretty good choice if you don’t have a lot of friends and don’t want to play the lone ranger in a text game.
Note that this character has abandonment issues. They feel as though everyone around them is setting them up for their ultimate descent into the MUD. Your character will likely become sensitive easily and will often overreact to someone leaving for a short period of time.
Cheated by lover/friend
This roleplay persona comes from any typical romance novel you’ve read where the heroine/protagonist must rise above her distrust of the opposite sex. Either their relationship went sour or they were left in the middle of nowhere with no shoes to walk home in, or they were left to foot a bill they didn’t have the cash for. Either way, this type can fit into the role quite easily when role-playing.
Your character will probably be tired of everyone. Your character gets emotional quickly in text games, but anger is their tool of choice. This is a good character type to pick up if you’ve played a lot of JRPGs, as it tends to be generic.
This roleplay persona is found in all the old Wild West films. This character is a bad boy in all respects, tends to flout the law, and generally seduces women and/or men very easily! They give off this aura of mischief that most people want to try to ‘tame’ them. If you don’t want someone to roleplay, pull it a simple character in a text game, but you want people to come to you. This, however, brings its own obvious challenges.
Remember that your character doesn’t often ask for things, she says. Your character will ride around town on a horse or in his own worn leather boots and pick apart the others around him in text games with a quick wit and honest tongue. Most thieves will play this part, because they don’t take crap from anyone and could care less about making friends.
Misunderstood soft-hearted schmuck
This character is often played by very young children who come into the text game role-playing environment a little green. They don’t want to step on anyone’s toes but they do want to try to play some role, even if it means they tend to annoy everyone else in the text game. This character tends to be overly forgiving and not really with a backbone.
You really need to turn off your trigger switch for anger/happiness to play this character. You usually have to throw yourself into everyone’s conversation without context and have an innate ability to answer any question even if it’s not directed at you.
The best thing to do when roleplaying in a text game is usually to avoid stereotypes. Try to create your own role and make your character as if he is a living, breathing being – not a familiar story borrowed from somewhere else. Perhaps make a T-chart of his likes or dislikes.
Also remember that your character should always be different from you so that you can really have fun with events and people. Just because your favorite color is blue doesn’t mean your character’s favorite color has to be blue. Really work with the things you are given and don’t forget to remember what happens!
Here are some examples of how to create your character while you’re playing text games!
Keep a journal of what happens. It’s the easiest way to remember names when you’re just starting out in the role-playing world. Did someone give you a necklace? Take note of the name.
Stick to your choices. I had a character who hated the color yellow because it was her sister’s favorite color. He would not accept daffodils as a gift and would reprimand him if a lover or anyone tried to give him a yellow dress. They had reason to hate and she stuck with him!
There is a reason why you work. If someone asks you to do something you don’t think your character would do, don’t do it – even if you’re friends with the out-of-character person. Why would a priest befriend a necromancer? Just because you met them once and they helped you doesn’t mean you’ll be best friends. You need a motivation. If someone raids your town during the day, don’t go hunting with them at night! It reflects badly on your ability to perform the role.
Avoid giving out of character arguments for anything. “Please give my friend his stuff back because he went to the bathroom and left his character logged in.” I’m sorry, but you have to be accountable for your actions and everything you do in a role playing world is considered in character. Man up your mistakes and take responsibility. Never let it happen again.
Ultimately my advice is to create a character as if they were a real person. Yes, people change but it would take a hard case for someone to go from truly evil to truly good. There’s always a reason why you’re working with your character, even if you don’t tell anyone that reason. Every character needs a motivation! Choose yours and stick with it!
