The Father of Oleander Soup – Part 2 of the Oleander Series

In the previous article “A Surprising Discovery in Turkey”, the first of this series of articles about oleander, I described how Dr. HZ Özel discovered and successfully treated an ancient remedy for cancer and other conditions in rural Turkey in the early 1960s. Over the past 40 years, thousands of patients have been treated by Dr. Ozel, who patented the drug and entered FDA trials. Unfortunately, after passing Phase I trials, the patented drug, known as Unvirgel, was dogged by lack of money (many considered a patent based on an old remedy and a generic plant weak) and inter-company strife – and that was before this promising cancer fighter even reached the market as an FDA-approved drug. May be many years.

The good news is that you don’t have to wait for an approved drug, because you can make your own oleander extract at home on your stovetop, based on Dr. Ozell’s original patent and folk remedies that have been used for thousands of years. . Oleander is a naturally growing plant found throughout the southern and southwestern United States and many parts of the world, and if it doesn’t grow naturally near you, you can order oleander plants from many mail-order nurseries on the Internet. (There are at least three sources of a commercial supplemental version that I’m aware of, but that will have to wait for the next installment in this series.)

Yes, you can make your own oleander remedy, which is as easy as a big pot of beans at home known as “oleander soup,” and for that, you can thank a personal injury lawyer named Edward F. Hensley from Sun. Antonio, Texas, which I call “the father of oleander soup.”

In 2002, Ed’s mother was diagnosed with liver and lung cancer, small cell, and a sister with hepatitis-C. Ed’s sister, Katrina (Cat), began researching and networking with her friends for answers to the doctor’s prognosis that Betty Hensley had only months to live. After contacting an old friend of his, he was told about a clinic in Honduras that he could contact and discuss a new cancer drug, which was being developed in San Antonio. Cat made a few calls and found out who to order the medicine from. It costs $1500.00 for a six week supply called Unvirgel(TM). Kat, Ed and their brother John put up the initial funds and the drug was ordered.

Betty saw an oncologist in San Antonio, who advised her of the risks of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and the fact that at her advanced stage, it had a small chance of prolonging her life and a large possibility of serious aspects. effects, including destruction of his immune system. Nevertheless, he tried chemo for several weeks, with no results. When Anvirzel(TM) arrived, he began injecting it into the cat, following instructions from a Honduran medical doctor. Three weeks later he went for a new scan with his oncologist. New films show the tumors in both his lungs and his liver are shrinking. His doctor could not directly participate in the injection, but agreed to study the drug.

When the six-week supply was almost gone, and Betty was very sore at the site of her injection, Ed began researching what this new drug was made of, and what its long-term use was going to be, and what it would cost. The FDA posted a letter on its site, warning the drug made from the oleander plant is unproven and should not be used. Nevertheless, the Honduran clinic reported many successful cures for various types of cancer, including juvenile brain cancer.

Ed was determined to find out what was in the drug and went to the US Patent Office web site and searched using the word Unvirgel. After several searches, Ed found the patent. It was about 39 pages of legalese, written in the language of patent attorneys who charge $400 an hour to write patents, that only lawyers and scientists dare read.

After several weeks of part-time study, the patent began to pay off. It was a very confusing, overly detailed and exaggerated method of making soup from the leaves and stems of a common plant, the oleander. No problem. Ed had huge oleander plants in his back yard, which were very healthy ornaments with beautiful flowers all year round. Making soup was as simple as getting a soup pot, some clippers, an electric hot plate and a place to cook. Ed’s wife, Carol, would not allow him to cook in her kitchen, so Ed was relegated to his outdoor store room, a 10×18-foot building to store yard equipment and seasonal sports equipment. After burning several pots of soup because the heat was too high, Ed turned down the heat, and boiled water and oleander clippings for four hours. He then removed the leaves and stems and strained the remaining broth using paper towels and a plastic strainer. According to Dr. Ozell’s method in the patent, he allowed the broth to cool before straining. He then slowly boils the broth until about one-fifth of the original liquid remains at the bottom of the 12-quart pot.

Ed measured specific gravity with an anti-freeze gauge, which shows the measurement on a smaller scale. This was where Dr. Ozell recommended in the patent, almost as thick as chicken soup broth. Next, 10 feeder rats were purchased and given the new fluid, which Ed named “oleander soup,” as their sole source of fluid for two weeks, with all the rat food they could eat. The mice gained weight, were lethargic, but alive and looking good.

Ed’s mother then stopped his supply of Unvirgel, so Ed took a bottle of soup to Betty’s house to compare with her medication. It looked the same. It tastes the same. The new soup was fresh, reconstituted rather than freeze dried and, according to Betty, tasted fresher. Ed went first and tried some, about a teaspoon. Betty then tried it, taking a teaspoon full. He declared that he liked the fresh version better and that was it. He took the oral dose three times a day with food, the only side effect being diarrhea, which subsided after a week.

Three weeks later her tests were amazing, showing the tumors were still shrinking and almost gone. A month later, she had no tumor. Betty gave up the soup after another month, when her doctor declared her cancer-free.

Tragically, about eight months later, feeling healthy, and energetic, Betty flopped onto her bed to sleep, and felt her collar bone snap. Tests showed cancer in the bone and that it was aggressive. Her oncologist referred her to another doctor who recommended some stronger new chemotherapy and discouraged her from going back on the oleander extract. Within two months, chemo slowed the bone cancer, but also destroyed his kidneys. He died a month later of kidney failure, never taking another drop of the oleander soup or Anvirgel, which had previously saved his life. But she trusted her oncologist, who was very nice and very persuasive. Thankfully, Betty lived to be 88 years old. Ed had been a two-pack-a-day smoker since his father gave him cigarettes at age 18. He died at age 61 of coronary disease, directly related to his heavy smoking.

Katrina was dealing with hepatitis-C, a serious liver condition, which often leads to liver cancer. She started making her own oleander soup and took it, hoping it would stop her condition. It did. In less than two months, her hepatitis-C was gone. His liver enzymes were normal. It did not return for more than two years. He shared the recipe with doctors from Mexico who were treating poor patients with AIDS, cancer, hepatitis-C and psoriasis. A friend of hers reported that her rheumatoid arthritis symptoms went away using home remedies. He laughs as he describes the scene in his kitchen with a large pot of boiling leaves, and two Mexican brothers, medical doctors, standing there taking notes on how to cook something as difficult as “boracho beans” or chicken nuggets, two favorite Mexican dishes.

Later in 2003, Ed was surfing the Internet, looking for sites that mentioned “Anvirzel”. He found the Minnesota Wellness Directory site and read their comments about how good the prospects were for this new extract made from poisonous oleander leaves. Ed e-mailed the host the recipe and a brief summary of his research. After the host, David Bonello, researched the idea and soup recipe with input from his herbalist and physician friends, he published the recipe on his site in his June 2003 newsletter, along with a warning about its use.

Since 2003, many people have used the recipe to make their own oleander soup, including Ed Hensley, David Bonello, and friends and family of the author. None of them reported serious side effects, and many of them reported that their cancer and other disorders disappeared or greatly improved.
