Learn the Six Levels of a Dog-Bite
Aggression is a survival skill that all dogs need. Dogs bite for many reasons. Over the past two decades it has become “trendy” among dog trainers and behaviorists to try to solve and eliminate dog aggression. A common definition of “bite” is “to hold with the teeth so that they penetrate, grasp, or wound.”
To measure severity levels, Dr. Ian Dunbar has created the following chart/guide on “levels” of bites.
Level 1: This bite does not touch the skin. The dog is biting or snapping at the air.
Level 2: This bite makes contact with the skin, but does not break the skin. There may be pain and bruising, but no friction will be visible.
Level 3: This bite consists of one to three punctures in one bite with a puncture less than ½ the depth of the eye tooth (fang) or tear.
Level 4: The dog is applying heavy pressure between the bites. 1 to 4 puncture wounds with or without lacerations, depth greater than ½ of canine tooth. It is usually accompanied by trauma and may require treatment. These injuries indicate that the dog grabbed and shook what was in its mouth.
Level 5: Multiple level 4 bites. This dog is usually beyond reason and can feel
Life is threatened.
Level 6: Killed by the dog.
Biting can also occur when the dog is highly agitated/excited while chasing people along fence lines or off a tie out/chain. This is called “barrier frustration” and it can (and does) happen commonly even though most dogs don’t bite. Bites usually occur when the dog owner/handler tries to physically control the dog. The dog gets so excited that it indiscriminately bites the person. This is called “displacement aggression” and is quite common.
Most large powerful breeds can cause more serious injuries than smaller dogs. Remember that this is a mixed breed and not a purebred dog type often involved in human bites.
Some warning signs of aggression and bites may be possible:
o Any health changes or long-term health problems
o Anxious or exaggerated behavior (fear of new or specific people or places)
o Biting or biting history (past behavior is a predictor or future behavior)
o roar
o New behavioral changes (sudden interruptions)
o Obsessive fence/kennel running/chasing
o Severe separation problems
o Uncontrolled lunging of man or dog while restrained
Most dogs with level 6 and level 5 bites are euthanized. Level 3 and 4 beaters require serious behavior modification to further eliminate risk. Level 1 and 2 biters should also help with relative ease and guide a behavior consultant.
However, if your dog is obedience trained, maintains a social life (regularly out of the house and yard), is neutered or spayed, healthy and female, your dog is less likely to bite. But, that doesn’t mean he won’t. After all, anything with teeth can bite!
