We Are As a Nation Heading Into Bankruptcy and Financial Disaster – A Medical Disaster Also
The meltdown in our financial markets has become a stepping stone for the government to step in under the guise of aid, trying to control the salaries of top executives across the business community. I agree that pay and compensation for top level management has gone beyond logic and there should be caps and limitations where performance is tied to results. It cannot be tolerated by today’s marketplace that a failed company should overpay its top people for a job poorly done.
Performance must come before calculation and drive the company forward in terms of value. We can’t keep paying for failure! In today’s business environment, people want a big name with good intentions and the right background in business to run a company for the benefit of all its employees and stockholders. Gone are the days where a company goes bankrupt but all the top brass go home with a huge severance package for failure. Big money is for doing a good job that is guaranteed to pay big sums of money for the results And at most, the major portion of the payment must be tied to stock options.
Now we are taking over the companies after bailing them out with our taxpayers money. These companies still want to use that money for huge pay packages and do not want to improve the management of the company. They want to continue down the same path that led to the downfall in the first place. It is over to convince these people what we have to do. Either size up or ship out. When will they realize that the American people are fed up with incompetent leadership and are demanding action and performance.
Now the government wants to set salary and compensation levels in all businesses. And now we all see that the health reform they want benefits unions and businesses that don’t want to pay for coverage for employees or union members. Reasons behind all these alleged concerns for the American people. The government will take the load from businesses to cover the employees which cost them millions every year and dump it on the government. Unions don’t want to have medical coverage for their members so it falls on us as taxpayers to pick it up for them.
Do you really think that the president was concerned for people? This was part of a covert campaign pledge to get the unions their support and money. Why should we return to business a president who has railed against capitalism in its current form? The proposed taxes to pay for this program would be much higher than the proposal calls for. CBC figures and others that include all the individual bills under different names submitted to Congress put the value at one point eight trillion dollars.
It starts with a T. He admits that this will still leave about three million people who are not yet covered. So: if all these programs would cover fifteen to twenty million people who, according to his own words, are without coverage among the fifty million now claimed. What is the cost of just covering the difference between fifty million and thirty or thirty-five million? It is 1.8 trillion that he proposed in the new medial plan. I will say what I have come to believe. It was a promise to relieve large businessmen and laborers of the ever-increasing cost of their labor. When the President passes his bill; All efforts must go into the public option, and that means the government will have full control. He will fight tooth and nail to get it.
All medical procedures will be rationed and there will be strict restrictions on who gets what. Veterans will suffer the most from cuts to Medicare for procedures and tests, which bankrupts and so does Medicaid, which is being offered mostly to illegal immigrants and applies to almost anyone. Medicaid as it is run today is dragging down the entire medical system. People across this country are using our hospital emergency rooms as their personal doctor’s office. Thousands upon thousands go there for colds and minor complaints because it’s free for them.
If we put the co-payments collected up front per visit, we would see a dramatic reduction. Say if we charge $25. ER for every visit to the hospital then we can prevent unnecessary use. They still have plenty of clinics to care for indigent people and families. This amount will not help hospitals pay for visits but it will stop people going there for every little twitch or headache and minor shock. What we really need is to cut the waste and paperwork that buries every part of the medical field.
I have a suggestion to help the industry as a whole. As President; President Obama could mandate that all parts of the medical community come together and come up with a three-page document that covers all redundancy and treatment, with space for all kinds of information. They can attach test results if necessary. Each company will have input on what information is needed but all must fit into one three-page double-sided form. If they are unable to reach an agreement, the government will draw one up for them from efficiency experts and then they will have to stick with it. If everyone wants their own way, then no one will.
If America is to have any chance of emerging from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, we must cut spending for every department and agency in government. We have many organizations that go back to the early 1900s and beyond. We must weed out and examine every program in every department to see what can be disposed of as redundant or duplicate. We must turn off auto-increment for each program. Budget increases must be justified for each department and program. Now is the time for budget reforms and spending cuts for every proposed increase.
If America doesn’t send e-mails and letters to every one of their representatives, nothing will change and we will be in complete disarray with our financial system. America would be a second rate power and no other nation would feel safe buying our securities to repay our debt, then everything would collapse. I remember during the Clinton years that the Republicans had control of both houses and they came up with their Compact with America, which was designed to cut waste and spending in government. They forced through budget cuts and spending cuts that finally got us closer to a balanced budget. Of course President Clinton claimed credit for what they did but that was what was needed at the time.
Criticized and fought by President Clinton and yet we were in fairly good shape financially when he left office. No wonder they destroyed the White House and pardoned many of his friends and acquaintances from the accused. Politicians do that and many presidents have done the same but probably not to that extent. Medical care will be rationed and life support will be cut for the elderly and the wait for treatment and tests may be extended until the wait for death ends. Just look at countries that have a payer medical coverage and ask people who live under it for their opinion.
Any new system must be accompanied by reforms. Awards made by juries in the Northeast and other large communities across America must be realistic and measure what has happened. Paying 30 million to a victim or their family may sound good to those in the jury box but in the end it costs us all. I have had the opportunity to file a case myself but it was for an automobile accident. It was handled fairly and quickly. Frivolous litigation costs are spiraling out of control for those seeking money from business or medical malpractice claims. A lawyer who sues anyone and everyone for any perceived injury or insult needs to stop. Any birth defect will have a lawyer who wants to sue someone for malpractice. Birth defects have been happening since before our doctors.
They have to have some standard where we can prevent frivolous lawsuits by lawyers trying to blackmail doctors into settling to get them out of the way. Doctors then need their own lawyers, and that’s where malpractice insurance companies charge extra fees. It is paid by all of us when we go to any doctor who has to pay an insurance premium to practice. I have seen statistics on television news showing that the number of doctors leaving their practice is increasing by 40% as doctors move away from practicing as individuals and more and more are forming group practices with umbrella coverage for all. Some are even retiring early to get out of the rat race.
Cases like this happen every day across America when we have no restrictions on who can sue whom or for what reasons. Somewhere, somehow we have to come up with a cap on certain types of medical malpractice lawsuits and justify a lawsuit on a “reasonable” basis. I don’t have the answers, but we have great minds across America, and if they can come up with solutions that make sense, that are reasonable, considered by all parties, they should be accepted. I seem to have strayed far from where I started but this is a very complicated subject.
The economy is a mess and adopting a medical plan that currently costs over $900 billion if not closer to $2 trillion to cover less than 20 million out of 50 million is great if not very close to criminal. Fifty million of them are currently not covered by medical insurance, to use the President’s own words! The new proposed plan would leave thirty million still not covered by the new policy. What we’re spending, even the president’s own figure of $900 billion, is only 20 million more to cover now. Forgive me for disagreeing with the plan.
If what I have written makes sense to you, I want only one thing from each of you. Write letters, e-mails or telegrams to anyone in your local, state or federal government. Tell your local representatives how you feel. I am sure, you can spend at least two hours a week on the web on things that interest you or affect you and your family. If not us, who will? It’s up to all of us to do what we can to inform ourselves and vote in every election, and demand that our elected officials answer the way they vote on the bills that come before them. We have that right because they are there to represent us.
As I’ve said many times before in other forums: All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men (and women) to do nothing. If we don’t, who will? God bless America!
