Great Expectations – Charles Dickens – English Literature Essay

Charles Dicken’s Great Expectations is a story about a boy, Philip Pirip, who comes to a point in his life where his life changes drastically from when he was growing up. Whenever this change happens, he tries his best not to let people know about his past life where he was a normal boy. Throughout the novel, Dickens shows how people sometimes lead two lives that they want to keep separate.

Changes in Pip’s life are marked in several ways. First, there is a physical change, when he moves to London. It only emphasizes the difference between the two ³lives. Previously, he lived in a small town that was near some swamps, both of which reflect the general aspect of his life. London is seen by Pip as a wonderful and wonderful city that symbolizes his hopes for his future. Another change in his life is that he is treated well by others. Mr. Traub, the tailor, takes exception to Pip when he hears he has come into a fortune. He is quick to measure up to Pip, and is angry with his son for not showing equal respect for Pip’s wealth. Then, when he sees Pumblechuck, he repeatedly asks Pip if he can shake his hand, as if it were some great honor. Before the news, he treated Pip no differently than any other normal boy. Pip also observes the way his new acquaintances are treated, especially Mr. Jaggers. He is treated with great respect by everyone and even inspires fear in some. With the exception of Miss Havisham, who possessed his great wealth, Pip had never seen such a level of respect for anyone he knew directly.

This dual lifestyle parallels that of Mr. Wemmick, Mr. Jaggers’ clerk. Mr. Wemmick, when at work, only thinks about his work, and doesn’t let his personal life affect how he goes about his business. The flip side of the coin is also true, when he goes home, he forgets everything that happened at work and concentrates on pleasing his deaf father. The scene when he takes Pip to work shows the changes he goes through on his way to work: by degrees, Wemmick becomes dry and hard as we go, and his face hardens again at the post office. Like Pip, he changes how he acts depending on the role he is playing.
