Japanese Glossary For Image Board Users

Image boards have become a popular web pastime in recent years. If you’ve been to places like 4chan, 7chan, and the like, you’ve seen a unique culture that mixes pictorial and photographic art from both Western and Japanese cultures. After you browse these places for a while, it starts to become clear that Japanese and English are so mixed together, you need a foot in each culture to understand what’s going on.

So here’s a guide to the most common Japanese words you’ll find in the picture board world. Keep in mind that these places are mostly inhabited by fans of anime, manga and video games, so most of the terms are related to this culture.

Anime – Japanese animation. All animated cartoons originated in Japan.

Baka – Art representing a fool, or folly. The Disney character Goofy would be considered a Baka.

bancho – A delinquent or rebellious boy.

big – Art appealing to or depicting a gay man, or gay men.

Bishojo – A beautiful young woman, older than a teenager but younger than university age.

Bukkake – A fetish for promiscuous sex, and art depicts this fetish.

buriko – An adult pretends to be a child. Characteristic of art depicting age-games.

-Chan – A suffix meaning “relating to;” Also a Japanese honoree.

chibi – a small, small person or very young child. Also a certain anime/manga drawing style, making a character look dwarfed or deformed. Western cartoon elves can be considered chibi.

Cosplay – Activities to dress up as favorite characters from anime/mange. Often done at comic book conventions and other fan events.

desu – A short Japanese word that combines a noun and a verb, literally translated as “it”. Image boards have taken it up as a meme, often repeating “deshu desu desu”, for various reasons including teasing newbies or stubbornly insisting on an argument.

Dujinshi – Self-published work. The equivalent of desktop self-publishing for manga.

ecchi – Generic term for sexual material.

footy – Hermaphrodites, or art depicting hermaphrodites. Half-man-half-woman.

gaiden – Side or supplementary material. On the image board, Gaiden will be some four-panel cartoon of manga characters, depicting events that are not accounted for in the manga itself. A side-story or spin-off.

guru – Extremely gross pornography that depicts extreme injury, mutilation or death. The manga equivalent of “Snuff Porn”.

hentai – Sensual Bond Manga. Most erotic Japanese illustrative material falls into this category.

Hikikomori – Taking an otaku to the next level: a loner and outsider whose only interest is anime/manga fandom. The equivalent of a Western “basement geek” only suggests a neurotic, unhealthy level of both obsession and alienation.

itasha – The subculture of decorating a car with manga/anime character decals.

Josey – A manga genre that appeals to mature women. Equivalent to western soap-opera.

kaitou – a mystery. The elusive thief is also someone with phantom-like aspects. A fool living in the shadows. Equivalent to the Western Rogue or Hobbit.

katana – A Japanese sword. About 99% of the time when you see ninjas and samurai with swords, they are shown wielding katanas.

Kawaii – Meeting the Japanese standard for “cute”.

Kawaiko – A beautiful child.

kei – A sculptural style originally used to depict the Buddha. In contrast to the more familiar (in the West) view of the Buddha as a smiling, smiling fellow, Japanese Buddhas are slim and serious.

lolicon – a slang term shared between Japanese and Western cultures for a preference for childlike depictions of women.

the manga – Japanese comic books. All graphic, printed media of a cartoon nature originating in Japan.

Mangaka – A manga creator. Japanese for “cartoonist”.

Manzai – A style of humor involving a humorous pairing of a “plain man” and a “funny man”. In Western culture, Abbott and Costello would be considered Manzai.

mecha – Anime or manga involving large, armored, warrior robots, usually piloted by a human inside.

Meganecco – Attraction to girls who wear glasses. Anime or manga featuring “geeky” girls.

miko – A female temple attendant. Equivalent to a western monk.

moe – A slang term for an anime or manga fan, or an attraction to anime and manga characters.

neko – A kitten or a cat, especially when shown as cute. A cat costume, or half-human-half-cat also applies to describe a woman.

okaki – Scribbling and doodling. Amateur art by fans.

ojou – High class or wealthy women.

Omorashi – A fetish for urination. The Western equivalent of “water sports.”

oni – A demon or evil spirit.

orange – A man who is aggressive and withdrawn, and sweet and charming.

That’s it – Very strong fans of manga, anime or video games. More serious than moe, not as serious as hikikomori.

pokemon – Japan’s most famous anime/manga/video game franchise.

sakura – A cherry blossom. A very common artistic theme in Japan.

seinen – a manga genre that appeals to adult males. Josei is the male equivalent.

feeling – A teacher or master.

Sentai – Japanese superheroes. Also refers to military heroes; In the West, both Hercules and GI Joe would fall under the Sentai category.

Shibari – Japanese knotting, a complex and specialized art form involving raised rope ties.

shinigami – Japanese angel of death in mythology. Equivalent to the Western “Grim Reaper”, though shinigami are an entire class and not just one.

shojo – a manga genre that appeals to young women and girls. Josey is the youngest peer.

listen to – a manga genre that appeals to youth and boys. Usually action and adventure stories.

Shotacon – Japanese version of “Boy’s Love”, depicting young boys in a erotic context. The male version of Lollikon.

sukeban – Delinquent or rebellious girl.

Tan – A suffix meaning a character used as a mascot for a product. For example, the letters used to represent different computer operating systems are “OS-tans.”

tsundere – A woman who is aggressive and withdrawn and sweet and charming.

Yakuza – Japanese gangs and gangsters. Organized crime. Equivalent to western mafias.

Yandere – A psychotic stalker. A genre of Japanese manga/anime depicting shy, quiet people who become obsessed with someone, eventually becoming violent and abusive, even murderous.

yaoi – Japanese manga/anime depicting gay men but intended for women In the West, if you make fiction specifically for “fag hags,” it would be called a yaoi.

Yuri – Art appealing to or depicting a homosexual, or homosexual women.
