Should College Athletes Be Paid?

College sports bring in big dollars every year at the major college level. These programs bring in $30 and sometimes $40 million dollars per year to universities and colleges, and the players get nothing. These are the same players who break their backs day in and day out for the university and don’t get a piece of that money and that doesn’t seem fair to me. I know what you’re thinking: These student athletes are getting a free education or a scholarship to play ball at that university. To me, that’s the least they can do.

When I watch college football on Saturdays and see full stadiums cheering with fans paying big bucks for a ticket, I say, what business can run a company and not pay its employees? You’d think I was talking about a third world country! Pay players now, please!

Think about it: Most college coaches earn six-figure salaries–major college programs and small ones. Some of these college coaches get shoe deals, some get TV and radio deals, and many other perks along the way. Also, if they are a good coach and win games, they will be offered another coaching job elsewhere with bigger money and bigger perks! Student athletes get nothing and, to me, something should be done about it. Pay players now!

They will keep telling you that athletes are getting free tuition, free books, free room and board, and a good college education that will last a lifetime. So what! Players pay! I see this whole college as slave labor! Coaches make big money off the back of these players. You’ve heard stories of college athletes getting paid under the table. You’ve heard stories of players getting cars and lots of cash, you’ve heard stories of players getting all this and more. You’ve heard of players’ families getting cars and houses to attend that college program. All this goes on secretly!

Why do players take this money and cars and houses and more for their families? Appoint a cause of good; Some college programs feel that they need to offer these things in order to get a major college recruit. Some college programs (not all) will give these kids something to get into. Some of these players come from poor backgrounds, so getting some money for these kids is a big deal, especially if the players and their families don’t have money.

Being a college athlete is tough. The number of hours these first place players put in is a lot – every day of every week. They stay in class all day then practice after practice, eat dinner if they can and then study. Now this may all sound simple to you but the amount of time these student athletes put in is huge. Then the coaches want more. There may be film to study and there may be times when they are being watched by an athletic trainer. As a student athlete, you have to focus on your studies and your athletic performance or they will try to get rid of you.

College athletics is tough. Sometimes at the end of the day you are tired and don’t want to study or if they have some kind of study table for players, you can’t fully focus and often, your attention is elsewhere. Just think of the millions of people who go to work every day. They work long hours and may have long commutes from home. I’m sure the last thing working people want to do is spend extra hours doing more work. Most working people want to relax, maybe have a beer and watch some TV then call it a day. The big difference is they are getting paid for service and time and college ball players are not.

Most college student athletes don’t get their college degrees and one reason is the workouts and the games they play. So much pressure to do well that something will fall and that is their education. College coaches are known to look the other way as it relates to student athletes and their academics as long as that player can help win games.

For most college athletes, college programs no longer need their services when their eligibility is used up. Why would they? For 4 years these college programs have led these young men and women to death every day. College programs got everything they could get from these players. At the college level or any level it’s just about winning games and bringing in big money.

Take a look at baseball; If a high school baseball player is really good, he may be offered a contract to sign with a major league baseball team. Sometimes the offer is $200,000 and, I’ve heard, as much as $2 million dollars. Now if that high school baseball player takes that money they lose their college eligibility. Some high school baseball players pay to go to college where they can get better, sharpen their baseball skills and get drafted again by a major league team. Many high school baseball players take the money and the opportunity to try out for the big leagues. Many great players never make it to the majors. Some play in the minor leagues for years until they realize their dream of playing in the majors isn’t happening and they move on to something else.

Once you take that money you can’t go back and try to play college baseball. The same applies to all other sports. Your high school basketball players will try to make it in the NBA; You guys have to try out for the NFL. Many of these athletes were not afforded an education and many who attended college did not receive their degrees.

College athletes struggle with their academics. Many do not graduate and some drop out altogether. College athletics isn’t for everyone and many student athletes can’t make it so pay the players! Give them something for all their time and effort!

When these college programs make billions playing bowl games and the players still get nothing, that’s wrong. When it’s “March Madness” time for college basketball and millions are glued to their TVs for hours every day and the players give it their all–they still get nothing!

Why is it a problem to pay the players? Schools are making millions of dollars either way. This is not Mexico or China where workers are getting paid $1.00 an hour to make billions for some corporation – slave labor you know!

Why do you think players take money from so many outside sources? Why are players suspended from the team for breaking team rules? Why are college programs on probation? All because of money. You have a lot of players who come from disadvantaged backgrounds where their families don’t have money. If these disadvantaged young student athletes had to pay for college out of their own pockets, most would not be in college.

Some student athletes come from backgrounds where the education system is not that good. Their school districts are underfunded and mismanaged. For many student athletes, their path is an education with a full athletic scholarship. Sports is their future. Many student athletes focus solely on athletics thinking that one day they will be good enough to play in the pros. So when money is dangled in front of some student athlete’s face, the temptation is irresistible!

Over the years we have heard stories of players and coaches getting into trouble over money. We’ve heard of entire college programs being killed by the NCAA because of paying players. Why do they do it? Why is money a problem? One reason is that it is easier to get certain types of players from certain types of backgrounds. Big-time college programs can only survive with big-time major college players so they pay them. We all know that paying college athletes is wrong (as set by NCAA guidelines). But this rule needs to be changed now.

College athletes may be paid if they receive scholarships. If players were paid, I believe you would get more college athletes graduating from college because there would be a stronger incentive to work hard in the classroom. Big universities pay college coaches more based on their performance, and players should be paid as well.

This corruption will stop if the players get paid. No more booster paying players, no more college players selling their shoes, no more college players taking jobs that pay them big money for just a few hours of work. It’s tough out there for a student athlete! Did you know that a non-student athlete can get a job to earn extra money and work around their schedule but a student athlete can’t get a job until after the school year and has restrictions on the type of work they can get.

College student athletes do not follow the rules of college athletics! The playing field is not level. Players pay!
