Book Review: Cry of an Osprey by Angie Vancise
Angie Vance’s “Cry of an Osprey” is, in short, an emotional roller-coaster. Although the core seems to be an alternative love story, it’s a bigger picture background that every reader can relate to to a certain extent. It is a story of family ties, solidarity and the loss of a loved one.
At the center of the story stands Jax VanBeerman who suffered a stroke at the age of 48. It’s the trigger that brings together a scattered family, a current and an ex-boyfriend, and many others to share a few harrowing days together. There is a temporal dichotomy in time, with loved ones beside Jax in the hospital in the present, but also in the past, reliving memories of the good old days. It is in this process of remembering that regret comes in as characters wonder about alternative decisions and actions, what might have been. Indeed, as Jax fades from the living, he grows stronger in the hearts and memories of those who loved him. This is perhaps the most important lesson in the book.
One of the interesting stylistic features of the novel is the approach adopted by the author. He lets readers know about Jax only through other characters; Her sister Amelia and ex-boyfriend Ben. Each chapter is presented from the point of view of one or the other as we gradually become more familiar and close to them. Jax represents the overlap between two different people and stories; It’s interesting to explore the different sides of him, but also the constants of his character from the perspective of the most important people in his life.
The book should appeal to a large audience especially since the story is told from the perspective of both sexes, but most of all because of the reasons it covers. It is much more than alternative lifestyles, the LGBT community and their struggles, it reaches into a colorful period of human relationships, suffering and solidarity. However, it must be said that the novel contains some explicit content and language so it is not suitable for readers of all ages. All in all, Angie Vance’s debut novel “Cry of an Osprey” is a very personal piece with a strong gravitational pull. There are many notable aspects to mention, but above all it is the sincerity and vulnerability that captivates the reader and makes him resonate with the characters. Also, the cover of the book is painted by the author himself, wrapping his text in purple mist.
