The Cauldron by Colin Forbes Book Review
Before I give you my opinion on this book, I have now read 3 books by Colin Forbes with the same characters: Tweed and Company to get a better feel for the characters. After reading three books, I have to say I am not a fan of Colin Forbes.
The Cauldron is a complex story with many holes in the plot line, unbelievable characters and terrible dialogue. This is not to mention the plethora of spelling mistakes throughout his books. Whoever does the editing or proofreading should be fired!
Main Character:
tweed – Head of a secret British agency that hunts down terrorists and bad guys.
Paula Gray – Tweed Assistant, beautiful, intelligent and Tweed’s special friend
Bob Newman – Tweed and Paul’s Assistant
Marler – Sniper, world champion shooter and part of the Tweed team
Bernard Moloch – Billionaire industrialist intent on blowing up the coast of California
Henchmen abound – Lots of awkward characters who seemed very clever, but could never do anything right. More like “Keystone Police”.
Background:
A body of Paula Gray was found off the coast of California, and a few weeks later another identical body of Bob Newman was found off the coast of Cornwall, England. Do they just look like the same woman? Hmm… how strange and how convenient.
Meanwhile, mega-billionaire Bernard Moloch and his “genius seismologist brother” plan to use a newly developed explosive called xenobium to blow the California coast into the ocean using seismic blasts.
After they show how effective it is, they plan to sell it to Middle Eastern countries. Now they are collecting evidence of travel between Britain and California. They stay in the same hotel and meet the same people in both hotels and no one finds it strange. Why, see the vanity is here too. And how strange, Cornwall’s Weatherby looks good, even though he’s broke, vacationing in California.
Even after they discover what’s going to happen, they never seem to take action, and the few secret activities they use – a telephone box in town and not a hotel – are so dumb because everyone knows they’re government agents and even Moloch invites them in.” The end of them for tea.
The whole story is so poorly put together that it took me weeks to finish this 484 page book. If told properly, this could be a wonderful 300-page story.
I cannot recommend this book or any of his other Tweed novels that I have read, as I have found the same faults with other books. Unfortunately, I have 6 other books by him in my library, which will go unread unless I’m really desperate.
