Why JK Rowling’s Harry Potter Series Isn’t Just For Children

A few years ago in the summer of 2000 and between college semesters I worked at a summer camp in New Hampshire. When the mailman showed up at our campground with a different car, I knew something was up. Instead of the familiar white truck with the steering wheel on the right for easy access to the mailbox, he showed up in a cargo van like one used by a plumber. As soon as he stopped, our camp director greeted him and started helping him carry several armloads of packages. Since I wasn’t busy at the moment, I walked over to see if I could help.

“Wow,” I said. “There must have been a lot of mail today. What’s the occasion?”

“It’s the release of the new Harry Potter book,” the director said. “Almost every camper asked their parents to send them a copy.”

There were at least fifty hardbound copies of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” that day. After a while, almost every camp of every age group had their noses in their books desperately trying to absorb as much as possible. I was surprised by the popularity of the books then, but did not start reading the book then, it took the literary world by storm.

I didn’t start reading the Harry Potter books until the following year – the girl I was seeing in college was very into them and was constantly pestering me to try to read them. Safe to say, I gave it a shot and was immediately hooked. Here’s why:

The characters are very unique from one to the next and Harry, as you will learn, is just like every other boy out there–an “everyman” if you will.

The magic of the story is incredible. An example is the Quidditch game where Hogwarts students play a mixture of hockey and football sitting on broomsticks. There are also potions that can change its user into a different person, and the “Mirror of Erased” (which spells ‘desire’ backwards) that shows you what your heart desires, among other things.

Many themes are prevalent in the story; Such irony, across a war between good and evil, the ability to deal with death, the power of love and friendship which in fact, Harry’s greatest strength is rather his knowledge and talent as a wizard.

Watching Harry Potter as he grows up and changes from a child to a young adult is surprisingly accurate, at least to me. The psychology behind his thoughts is believable to the reader as he struggles between wanting to live as an ordinary boy, yet being “marked” for death by his arch nemesis, Lord Voldemort.

Apart from this, the most common theme of the Harry Potter series is that it is pure fun for the reader. Whether you’re watching the movie with or without your kids, it’s an absolute treat to read. I highly recommend the book to everyone young or old. The series actually contains themes that also parallel Greek mythology. For example, Professor Minerva McGonagall is in all fairness really Athena, just as her name implies. But don’t let me spoil it all for you. After reading JK Rowling’s book, you will definitely not regret it.
