Bipolar Stories – A Mark of Genius?

Many celebrities suffered from bipolar disorder, or are now believed to have had it based on their lives and stories. There have been so many, in fact, that some consider it a sign of genius. This may or may not be true, but after seeing so many famous people with bipolar disorder it’s easy to see why the connection has been made. You can read several bipolar stories here.

Many famous authors are believed to have had bipolar disorder. Mark Twain, the famous and popular American humorist, author and lecturer, suffered significant personal and professional losses with the demise of his publishing business. Although bipolar symptoms are believed to have affected his later life, Mark Twain is an example of the positive impact bipolar disorder can have on a person’s creativity. Unfortunately, like many bipolar celebrities many of his crazy business ideas never came to fruition.

Kurt Vonnegut is believed to have suffered from bipolar disorder. After a severe depression in 1969, when he published his world famous novel Slaughterhouse-Five, he vowed never to write another book. However, he went on to write another novel just four years later. William Faulkner, who invented an entirely fictional place Yoknapatawha County lived with symptoms of bipolar disorder. Many other famous novelists and poets, such as Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Virginia Woolf, were known to be bipolar.

Other creative geniuses such as Beethoven, Van Gogh and Isaac Newton are also believed to have suffered from this disorder and it may have contributed to their exceptional gifts. Among modern politicians, Winston Churchill and Benjamin Franklin are the shining examples of a successful bipolar personality in modern history.

People with bipolar disorder affect our lives in countless ways. Bipolar disorder indirectly enlists our love for affecting the health of those who have made substantial contributions to humanity. It is known that manic episodes or hypomania are a symptom of bipolar disorder and are often times of intense productivity. And while bipolar disorder causes real misery for those who live with it, it’s hard to deny that it can be considered a type of disorder for gifted and talented people.

The subject of bipolar disorder has also been widely represented in books and novels. Patty Duke Academy Award-winning American actress was a bipolar patient who suffered bouts of bipolar disorder throughout her life. He described the disease in his book and talked about his struggle with the disorder in numerous interviews. Kay Redfield Jamison, a well-known psychologist when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 28, published two books on her own experiences with the disease and analyzes of the interaction between illness and creativity. Other famous people have also written about this topic and how mental disorders affected their lives.

Many modern stars and celebrities have been diagnosed with this type of mental disorder by their doctors. Actresses Linda Hamilton, Margot Kidder, Carrie Fisher and the already mentioned Patty Duke are bipolar patients, while musicians such as Kurt Cobain, Ozzy Osbourne, Axl Rose and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails have received the same diagnosis from psychiatric professionals.

In the past, bipolar people were misunderstood and actually feared by most other people so their lives were extremely complicated and often socially isolated. They had to live under extreme pressure from both inside and outside.

Today, the disorder is treated with therapy and medication that relieves the main symptoms of the disease. At the same time many patients feel that the drugs stifle their creativity.

Bipolar disorder is described as a lifelong, persistent condition that must be carefully managed and treated continuously. Modern medical science has done much to develop treatments that address disorders without stifling creativity across the spectrum. Today there are many very well-functioning bipolar people with above-average creativity, even though they had symptoms of life-threatening depression. Famous bipolar people have proven that this disorder does not prevent people from living a normal life full of creativity and innovative ideas.
