Simcity – Will You Build The Ideal City?
Start with an underdeveloped city (you name it yourself) and build it into a metropolis. Or, take on the challenge of saving a town in trouble. Either way, taxes, zoning, crime, transportation, education, fire control and other complex issues are in your hands.
Time is passing, and every decision you make has a future consequence. Your assistant, Dr. Wright, can help you make the right decision. Ask! Strange disasters threaten your growing city, such as fires, earthquakes, plane crashes, and even a giant koopa with a nose for industrial pollution!
Build an ideal city? Or will the disgruntled citizens leave you in the ghost town?
SimCity was released for the Super Nintendo in 1991, one of the first games released after the original three (Mario World, F-Zero, and PilotWings). There really isn’t a whole lot to say about the story; You have been elected mayor of a barren land form (and some water) and your goal is to turn it into a megalopolis of 500,000 citizens. Simple words? It doesn’t.
The graphics fit well with the game and by themselves they are indeed above average. The music is just great as the gameplay fits perfectly into the framework of the game. It all blends together very nicely, making it very enjoyable to play.
This game was not a showcase for the SNES’s graphical capabilities, nor was it intended to be. However, there were some nice effects like the seasons change every three months, thus changing the color of the forest from green to brown to white. “Zones” don’t look like that in real life, especially when they’re first created.
Airports and seaports look pretty good. It’s also fairly easy to tell what’s going on, which is always a plus as if a zone needs power, you’ll see a lightning bolt flash to turn it on and off. Some structures are also animated, especially industrial zones.
Effect of sound:
To be honest, until you reach Metropolis (100,000 citizens), the music is really kind of boring but before that, the disaster theme is one of the best you’ll hear. Whatever stage of development your city is in, the music seems to fit. Of course, when the music becomes boring, it doesn’t really help.
Sound effects wise, there’s a really slim selection apart from clicking icons and placing zones. Sometimes you get a rail car start up, or a plane flying (or crashing down, just before that cool disaster music). Other than that, there isn’t really much to sound effects through the game.
While it’s true that the game would really benefit from a mouse device, this game predated the SNES mouse by a year or so, so that wasn’t an option. Despite this, the game controls really well, and has a lot going for it in light of the game’s sequels, Simcity 2000 and 3000. You can set the pace of the game, wreak havoc on your city at will (don’t invoke the almighty nuclear meltdown though you can… ), or go to Dr. Wright for some advice.
Of course, to achieve your goals, you need to listen to your citizens and give them what they want. Icon interface lets you access this information whenever you need it As far as building your city goes, it’s really easy: click on the structure you want to build, find a spot for it, press a button, and “BAM” there you have your structure.
Although it is not really a story, the basic premise was very original for its time. You are the mayor of a city that you have to guide to megalopolisdom. Keep in mind that story wasn’t a very important part of video games in 1991, not that the premise would have been any different. But let’s face it, it’s not the story that will keep you playing this game.
Quite frankly, I believe that pulling off a megalopolis the right way is the single hardest feat in all of video gaming. And you probably already know that the Big Money Code doesn’t really make it easy. As with any game like this, you need to slow down and build a solid financial base before you can build any kind of decent speed (ie, you spend a lot of time with the game speed set to fast, just wait around). Big Money Code can make it faster, but it’s not easy trust me.
Of course, there is not much to do after you lose this game. Of course you can never beat the game in the Megalopolis sense. If you get bored, you can challenge one of 6 scenarios, where you’re given a city with problems ranging from the mundane (traffic, crime) to the near-catastrophic (nuclear meltdown). You have a fixed period of 5 or 10 years to fix the situation.
It’s quite a challenge to stay within your budget for this amount of time, given that you’ll probably lose several hundred dollars a year, while also having to improve the city. Before you beat them, the game is a lot of fun to play, but afterwards you get really sick of it.
It’s really the first sim game that spawned all the others, and it’s still one of the best. Effective graphics, a ”unique” soundtrack, great controls, and of course, disasters, make this a game you’ll want in your collection if you’re a fan of the simulation genre.
You will not be disappointed. Overall it’s just another classic game that transcends levels. While it’s not a terribly rare game like ”Final Fantasy III” or ”Mega Man X3,” it’s not very common either. (Though luckily at least its price range is generally reasonable.) Its sequels may be bigger but the original title is still going strong…
