Mind and Muscle – Can Negative Thoughts Affect Your Muscle Growth?

Surely by now we have all heard of the placebo effect and know how it affects the mind and muscles. I wrote a decent post on this topic which can be found on my blog.

The placebo effect is commonly found in medical practice. This is when a patient is given a substance, aka “a sugar pill,” and told that the substance is a real drug. When the medicine is taken, the patient becomes aware of the healing power of the medicine, believing that because of the medicine he will heal and recover.

Upon further investigation, we realize that it was not the sugar pill that cured the person, so the question remains, “What cured him?”

I wasn’t the sugar pill that healed him, he healed himself.

The human brain is amazing with its capabilities. It made your body and can heal it. What really healed the person was his strong, unwavering belief that he would be healed. Although he thought it was the pill that would cure him, he believed that he would recover.

It has a reverse reaction called the Nocebo Effect. This is the exact opposite of the placebo effect in that someone believes they will not be cured, regardless of what medication they take or what steps they take to get better. Because they believe that no matter what happens they will not be healed, they are not healed.

The Placebo Effect doesn’t always work, I mean you don’t always get what you want because you believe you will. Also, with the Nocebo Effect, you can sometimes recover even when you don’t fully expect it.

Does it have to do with building or losing muscle? Muscle growth has everything to do with the placebo effect. The reason people get well is because they believe they will. People build muscle because of their belief that they will. The problem is, you can lose muscle, or not gain muscle believing you can’t or can’t.

This is a huge problem within the fitness industry as a whole. I’m not talking about the placebo effect, I’m talking about people’s belief in their physical abilities. People will start a program expecting immediate, mind-blowing results. Unfortunately, most people do not achieve incredibly amazing results as quickly as they would like. Once this happens, people’s belief in their ability to lose fat or gain muscle is quickly replaced by doubt, embarrassment, regret, and even anger.

Remember the medical examples of placebo and nocebo effects from above. The person believed they would be cured and was, or the person believed they would not be cured and was not cured. The ability to increase muscle mass can be the same way. When you believe you’ll gain muscle you will, but if you believe you can’t gain mass you probably won’t because you’re working against yourself.

When you begin to believe with all your might that you will gain muscle, you set the wheels in your mind into motion, which activates your brain into muscle-building mode. Sadly, when you lose faith and doubt fills your mind, the wheel of progress grinds to a halt. It is like a blade of grass that is about to break the surface with positive thoughts, then negative thoughts come and the grass quickly dies and withers.

The best way to keep progress rolling is to maintain positive momentum and leave no room for doubt. Here are three simple steps to continue building mental muscle:

  1. Always think positive- It seems obvious and simple, but it is necessary. If you always think positively about your muscle gain, there is no room for doubt. It doesn’t have to turn into some therapy session you see on TV, just make sure all your thoughts about your exercise, nutrition, supplements, or anything related to achieving your muscle gains are always positive.
  2. Reinforcement Visualization – You should not always think positively about your training, you should visualize your success. Pick yourself the weight you want to lift, see how you want your body to look. Don’t just look at the picture, interact with it. Feel how great you will feel when you achieve your goal.
  3. Believe in yourself – Always believe that you can achieve your goals. There is no doubt that you can gain muscle or strength. If you don’t believe in yourself and your abilities, you will never succeed.

Winning the muscle building mind game is only half the battle. You need to have a good training, nutrition, and rest and recovery plan to fully benefit from the above mental strategies. Your brain has the ability to make your body muscle, and with a certain mindset you can use it to your advantage.
