Becoming Jane – Movie Review
Book Opinion Review: Let me say this right off the bat (in case you didn’t know), Jane Austen is the greatest writer of all time. I suppose some might dare call it an opinion, but we Zenites of the world know better. At this point, one or two of you may be wondering, “Who the heck is Jane Austen?” or “Jane Austen – Totally Chic Author.” If these sad thoughts are, in fact, running through your brain, please go back to watching Orange County Chopper.
However, naturally a film about the world’s greatest writer was bound to catch the attention of his most ardent fan (that would be me). Becoming Jane is essentially a fictional account of Jane Austen’s early adulthood and her relationship with a young lawyer named Tom Lefroy.
The movie is controversial on two points, and I will address each. Initially, there is some disagreement over whether an American actress (Anne Hathaway) should portray England’s beloved Jane. Hathaway’s portrayal of Austen is absolutely heartwarming, bringing the author’s warm, witty personality to life. His accent was well done, a few misses to be sure, but overall quite convincing. As an American, I claim I can be less particular about this.
The latter number depends on the believability of the movie’s plot. No one knows for sure the true depth of the relationship between Austen and Lefroy. The movie takes several leaps of faith, creating a deep love between the two main characters. Of course, there is little substantial evidence that Austen and Lefroy were as close as the movie suggests. By her own account, she liked him, and the general consensus among Austen scholars is that Lefroy was the basis for Mr. Darcy (for those of you who have continued reading this far instead of turning on The Deadliest Catch, Mr. Darcy is a protagonist in Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice).
I, for one, refuse to dwell on these debates. Anne Hathaway is a beautiful, talented actress, and I’m not such a purist that I can’t take some liberties with the story of my beloved Jane’s life. I enjoyed the entire movie. You could really get a sense of Jane as a person and it was clear how much her life inspired her work. His relationship with his sister, Cassandra, was beautifully portrayed, clearly the two were best friends. After watching the movie, one feels a deeper understanding of her novels and perhaps more importantly the era she lived in and the limitations she placed on women, in particular, but also on the men of the time. I encourage all Austin fans to attend Becoming Jane
And for the record, I love watching The Deadlist Catch. Those guys are awesome. I have a whole new appreciation for crab meat.
For those unfamiliar with Austen’s work and wishing to gain an appreciation for this most wonderful author, here are my suggestions for books to read.
Pride and Prejudice – Read this first, because it’s not only great, it’s his most famous book. In fact, truly one of the most famous novels of all time. The characters are so full of life, they almost jump off the page. This is especially true of heroine Elizabeth Bennet. For the best movie version, try the 1995 BBC epic starring Jennifer Ehle (another American, no less) with Elizabeth Bennet and Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.
Persuasion – In my somewhat humble opinion, this is his best book. I first heard it on CD (Juliet Stevenson is the goddess of Austen narrators, find one of her versions if you get the book on tape or CD). There is a section towards the end of this book, where the protagonist Ann Eliot receives a love letter. It’s not just a love letter, it’s a love letter. I pulled over, flipped the CD and listened again. So, I built a seven-car stack, it was worth it. The 1995 movie with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds is excellent.
Feelings and Sensibility – I think this is his darkest book, but you get a lot out of it. I see many parallels between this book and Being Zen. Eleanor Dashwood is an exceptional heroine, her strength and determination inspiring. For a movie choice, I cast my ballot with Emma Thompson’s version He takes some liberties with the story, but good. He edited the parts with great care and added a bit here and there to give the audience an understanding of this complex novel.
Mansfield Park – The heroine of this novel is the subject of much debate among Austen fans. Some find Fanny Price bland and dull, but I believe that is an underestimation of her worth. If you really give it an honest and thorough reading, you will see Fanny as a wonderful character. True she’s not as glamorous and fun as Elizabeth Bennet or Emma Woodhouse, but we can’t all be vivacious and vivacious. It’s a great book about morality and respect and discretion. I have no movie recommendations for this one. The 1999 version with Frances O’Connor featured some fine actors and the art direction and cinematography were first rate, but this heavily rewritten version is almost an affront to what Austen was trying to accomplish with her great novel.
Emma – I put this one near the bottom, not so much because it’s inappropriate (I actually named my beautiful daughter Emma), but because it seems different from the titles mentioned above. Emma is a flawed character, more so than most of Austen’s heroines. But I still love Emma, she has learned a lot about herself and wants to be a better person. Don’t we all, I ask? As for the movies, I personally love Gwyneth Paltrow’s Emma, even though they cut a few parts. Kate Beckinsale makes a wonderful Emma, but they added some things I could have done without. Even the silly, but sweet update, “Clueless,” is worth watching. Alicia Silverstone is very Emma.
Northanger Abbey – This is just a fun read, I laughed more reading this than any other book. This is one of her earlier works, so it lacks some of the depth of the other five novels, but it’s definitely worth a read. There is no movie version I care to recommend.
As a side note, ITV has recently made several of Austen’s novels into TV movies. I haven’t seen any yet, as they are not readily available in the US.
Additionally, although it may be noted that it may be cynical, many people have tried to imitate Austen’s style, writing sequels and prequels to his work. Obviously, this is just for fun and no one can make these books as exquisite as the real thing (or even close for that matter), but I’ve enjoyed a few.
One I recommend is Guess: A Recreation by Julia Barrett. It is a beautiful sequel to Pride and Prejudice. This is the story of what happened to Mr. Darcy’s sister, Georgiana.
Jane Austen’s Sanditon and “Another Lady,” is another interesting example. The first 11 chapters of the novel were actually written by Austen shortly before her death. The rest was added by another woman. The first section is, without a doubt, the best part, but the rest is a fun read. “The Other Lady” does an admirable job of ending what promises to be another great Austen novel.
There are countless other exemplary books, countless books about Jane, more Austen movies to discuss, and I could go on about them almost forever, but I’m too busy listening to my CD of piano classics from Jane Austen and World of the World. I tease, but on a serious note, anything you really need to know, you can find in the works of Jane Austen. These are not just innocent little romances (there’s nothing wrong with a silly, little romance) but commentary on the human condition, packed with humor and vibrant characters.
And yes, in short, the movie was really good.
