Goals Success – You Can Do it Too With Goal Setting

Tony Campolo tells a great story about a young man who found happiness and joy in the most unlikely of places. The young man was a professor of English literature in a state university. He is a Ph.D. in his field. Everything was there for him except joy and fulfillment. One day, the young professor went to the dean’s office and said, “I have resigned.” The shocked Dean looked at the young professor and told him that he couldn’t just walk out and that if he chose that he would never get a teaching job again. The young professor looked at his dean and said, “Okay.” Then he went out the door to find his future.

So what ever happened to this young professor? He became a mailman. “What a waste,” we say. “He had a Ph.D.! He should be teaching! That’s where he’ll make a difference!” Oh, he’s making a difference… as a mailman. You see, he’s a horrible mailman but an incredible man. Most of the other mail carriers at his post office finished their routes at least two hours before the young professor finished his work. Why is he so slow? Because he travels. The professor discovers that many of the people on his route have never met until they become mailmen. He discovered how lonely and suffering people are for love and kindness. The professor said that he discovered that the people in his path were interesting people who believed in literature or not. Are young professors still teaching? Absolutely! The only thing that has changed is the location of her classroom. By the way, young professors make a difference? What do you think?

In 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote the immortal words that all Americans had the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Notice he didn’t guarantee happiness. In fact, it was Benjamin Franklin (who helped draft the Declaration of Independence) who pointed out that to find happiness, “you must catch yourself with it.” We need to be like that young professor and pursue our happiness. Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about now– how to get caught happily. I believe happiness lies in achieving a goal. A dream that grips your life with passion. But how can we bring it to life? How do we get the car out of the garage and onto the road?

Right now, I’m going to share with you a goal setting process. I encourage you, my friend, to take the time to go through this process. It will take some effort but if you follow it with excellence it can change your life and happiness will come. It was Professor Kenneth Boulding who said, “If you pursue excellence, happiness will sneak up behind you and tap you on the shoulder. If you pursue mediocrity, you will surely catch it.”

Goal setting process

Step 1: Aim for balance

One of the keys to living a successful life is to live a balanced life. To do this, we need to have balanced goals. Now, this goes against the grain of our society. How does our culture define success? Mostly about fame and fortune. Take Hollywood as an example. On the surface, it appears that Hollywood is successful. It’s full of famous people who have more money than they know what to do with. But are they happy? Would you trade your life for them? I’m not sure. Many of them lead miserable, miserable lives. Many of them get great success in one area of life but fail in the whole life. Many of them have unbalanced goals. Most people living unbalanced lives are not happy. What we’re going to talk about is true success—balanced success.

To achieve balanced goals, we need to think and set goals in different areas of life. I believe we need to target at least four main areas. These four areas are personal development goals, career and financial goals, rest and relaxation/fun goals, and building our dreams. You can even subdivide these four areas and diversify your goals. For our roadmap today, we’re going to focus on these four areas to create a balanced life full of purpose. So, let’s get to it.

A. Pray.

As a Christian, prayer is a very important part of my life. I believe prayer should be the beginning and end point of every goal setting process. We must seek the Lord’s view of life. As we set our goals we need to follow His will and His desires for us. Ask for His wisdom, knowledge, and insight to determine His good goals for your life. Thanks to him for his help in this process.

B. Intelligence

This is where we start putting our goals on paper. What you do is put the four main areas of the goal in four separate columns on a piece of paper. Then you take each column separately and think about the goals you want to achieve in that area. yours Personal development goals Will include things like how to improve yourself (training, reading books, seminars, fitness, eating right, etc…), your relationships and your spiritual life.

Career and financial goals Include where you want to be in your career two years from now, five years from now, ten years from now. Include how much money you want to make this year. How much money you’re going to invest and save (and how) and more.

yours Aim for rest and relaxation/fun Include where you want to go on vacation this year, what hobbies you want to participate in, cars you want to buy, houses you want to build, etc…

The last area is yours Dream building goals. A dream maker is someone who gives back. Anyone who makes a difference in the lives of others. Someone who helps make other people’s dreams come true. The question here is how do you pay back? Maybe it’s serving at your church or giving time to a local charity. Maybe it’s a shut-in inspection or reading blind. How can you make a difference?

After you’ve brainstormed your goals, it’s time to narrow your focus. After your brainstorming session, you may have written down 100 or more goals. Well, you can’t get them all done today. What about a jack-of-all-trades? That’s right. He is no one’s master. All you need to do now is select 3-4 targets per column. These will become your work goals. The goals you are going to pursue now.

Step Two: Realistic Goals

“Realistic? What are we talking about realistic? I thought we were supposed to dream big? I thought we were going to shoot for the stars? It’s negative thinkers who say, ‘I’m not negative, I’m realistic!’ I don’t want to be like them. I want to be positive. I want to be a dreamer of great dreams that come true!” I agree. I also say we have to be realistic. For example, what if I set the goal of playing center for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers next year? What are my chances of reaching that goal? Be well now. But you and I both know that at five feet, ten inches tall and over 40 years old, I’m not going to play for the Pacers or any other team for that matter. It’s an unrealistic goal for me.

I believe we need to shoot for the stars. I believe we have to dream big. But I believe we also need to know the strength and power God has given us. When we tap into the gifts God has given us and allow Him to give birth to His dreams in our lives, we discover that the impossible is truly “possible with God.”

Step Three: Why?

One of the most important questions you can ask yourself during the goal setting process is “Why?” Why is this goal important to you? Why should you reach for it? You see, if you don’t have a big enough “why” you won’t have the motivation and persistence to follow through. And at that point, you have to get a new goal. If you have a big enough “why” you’re ready for step #4.

Step Four: Set a target date

The next step is when do you want to achieve your goal? Set a target date for completion. Reaching the target on time is not so important, but having something to shoot for is important. A target date that will stretch you. A target date that will drive you towards your success. So, what to do if you miss the target? You aim again and shoot again. This is the way to reach your goal. Keep shooting until…. keep trying… until… you reach your goals and your dreams come alive!

Step Five: Setting Your Goulet

Each goal is broken down into smaller goals or action steps that I call goallets. Achieving your goals step by step and over time you reach your full goal. For each of your goals, ask yourself, “What do I need to do first? Second? Third?” And so declare then commit yourself to taking action on that first goal within the next 24 hours. Immediately if possible. You need to get the car out of the garage and onto the road. Otherwise, there may be delays. Take action now!

I ask you a question, what will you do after you reach the first goal? You can say, “Step into the next goaltend.” Well, you are moving too fast. After reaching the first goal, what you do is evaluate. Are you still of course? Did the steps taken bring you closer to your original goal? If yes, then celebrate the victory. After every goal, we have to celebrate what we have achieved. It creates motivation. You see, we are going to spend 90% of our time on the journey to the goal. We need to make that experience measurable (through goals) and enjoyable (through celebrating wins). Let me ask another question. What do you do after you reach the main goal? Celebrate big time! Have a big victory party! Then what do you do? Set a new goal and go for it! Dr. Robert H. There is a concept called Schuler Pick to pick policy. The idea that when you reach the top of the mountain, the top of your goal, the angle you have more vision than you ever had before. You will be able to see (peek) the next greater peak (goal) of your life. Success will never leave you where you started. You are stronger, more skilled, more knowledgeable than ever before. Use your success and go for the next mountain top!

In May 1989, Mark E. Smith began to form a goal in his mind. You see, he will graduate from high school in a month. Now, that’s a big goal, but Mark had even bigger goals. His goal was to wheel across the stage under his own power in his manual wheelchair. Mark had cerebral palsy. If he didn’t have to use his electric wheelchair, he knew he could do anything.

To prepare for graduation, Mark began using his manual wheelchair during the school day. It was difficult. Wheeling around school with stacks of books was exhausting. His classmates offer to help him. They will be more than happy to push him to class. But Mark refused. He knew he had to do it himself.

Finally the day has arrived. It was June 14, 1989, graduation day. Mark and his classmates looked very different in their caps and gowns. Finally, it was Mark’s time. His name was called to do his diploma. As Mark pushed himself slowly to the front of the stage, he realized something. He received a standing ovation. It was like a stadium full of people cheering for an athlete. The goal was complete! Victory was at hand! Mark accepted his diploma and turned to his classmates. With the diploma held above his head and the pride of accomplishment in his heart, Mark exclaimed, “I did it… I did it!” And you can do it! Go for your goals…and live a great life!
