Kiss an Angel by Susan Elizabeth Phillips – A Review
When a circus came to our suburb, it reminded me of a book I read a year ago. A circus set in a circus is a fairly unique setting for a romance novel, so it stuck in my head. I had borrowed a lot of books from the library the previous year and try as I might, I couldn’t remember the author’s name or the book’s name. So in Amazon’s book section, I typed in the Russian word circus alex icon and to my delight, Kiss an Angel came up in the results. I didn’t think I really needed to read the book again, but something about it bothered me, so I borrowed it a second time, and regardless of some issues I had with the story and some of the characters, it was still enough to make me want to read it all again.
Daisy’s life was not easy. She’s the illegitimate daughter of an exhibitionist, promiscuous socialite mother, whom he accompanies around Europe, acquiring a hit-and-miss unusual education in the process and trying to stay unnoticed in the background. When her mother dies, Daisy finds herself heavily in debt and with no formal training or skills to support herself.
Her father, a Romanov historian, offers to help her financially, but there’s a catch. She must marry Alex Markov and live with him for six months, or her offer of financial support will be withdrawn.
With no other choice, Daisy reluctantly allows herself to be drawn into the proceedings.
The only reason Alex allows himself to get involved in Daisy’s father’s plans is because he owes her so much from an event many years ago. Otherwise, there is no way or anyone else who can force Alex to marry.
So a marriage begins between two unwilling strangers who may admire each other’s physical qualities but are otherwise completely mismatched.
Alex is determined to get out of the arrangement at the end of six months, or sooner, if he can make the living conditions so repulsive to the abusive, pushy, self-obsessed Daisy that she will leave him. Alex manages and performs in a traveling family circus. Daisy is afraid of even small dogs, so she faces many personal challenges to help care for the circus animals.
Alex expects Daisy to balk at any hard work but she surprises him by thriving in her new environment. For the first time she is taking responsibility for living for herself rather than being in her mother’s shadow, and she is learning to love the sense of personal achievement and job satisfaction.
Daisy’s presence in the circus community sparks some jealousy from Alex’s ex-boyfriend as well as a teenager with a serious crush on Alex, and they both begin to hurt Daisy and her budding relationship with Alex.
Alex reveals to Daisy that he will never love her and that he never wants children. Therefore, things get interesting as the circus travels around its performance circuit.
Daisy’s character is endearing because she truly has a heart of gold. It takes a long time for anyone to understand. He has always been very pure and during the book he discovers that he has powers. At the beginning of the book, he is afraid of the animals, but by the end, he has the entire menagerie of the circus eaten out of his hands.
Alex’s inability to see Daisy’s true qualities is frustrating at times. He has so many secrets and affairs from his past, combined with his attitude towards his forced marriage situation that he often comes across as an apathetic, unfeeling, brooding, unstable, heartless, ice cold block. Daisy takes time to warm to him. Initially, Alex is definitely not the most romantic hero, but he transforms and the reader sees more glimpses of it as it develops.
Kiss an Angel combines some unusual elements in a romance novel. There’s a contemporary arranged marriage, a telepathic animal and a circus, but when a story stays with you long after you’ve finished the book, one can tell the story is well done.
