The Law of Attraction and Other Unexpected Surprises
I have always believed in the law of attraction, meaning I was aware of my abilities that I focused on and worked on. I also believe that when I feel good (clear conscience) about my decisions that things will not only work out – they will work out well for everyone. My trust in this law goes beyond knowing that my thoughts will produce what I desire. My thoughts will draw me to experiences that my soul needs to grow. The following story about a small disaster was actually what I needed to create a successful business.
I just finished pouring the last concrete on a large stamped concrete project for a wealthy family in an exclusive area. Work included a backyard, front porch, walk and long driveway. We poured the last part of the driveway that connects to the street. I set up barricades on the road to secure the work before I went home. This was the last pour on the project and it went well. I was quite satisfied. However, when I arrived the next morning to finalize the work I discovered that a brief and localized rain shower had damaged a very small but visible area of the fresh concrete. All the final sections were beautiful, except for this one small area where the rain damaged the surface. The whole thing went well and the work was beautiful. I wondered, “How can this be”? I felt sick to my stomach. It didn’t rain at my house just a few miles away! I felt like a victim.
My mind raced as I explored different ideas for solutions. Maybe the owner will not notice. What about people driving by? They may only notice imperfections without knowing that the rest of the work was perfect. Maybe I could patch the damaged area; It will be faster and cheaper. But what if not? I still felt knots in my stomach. I followed another line of thought. It would be more expensive to remove the entire end section, but it would mean that everything would match. The whole project will then be impeccable. I breathed and it slowed my thoughts. I mentally calculated the replacement costs: labor; concrete; Hassle of calling other customers saying I won’t be there when I said. I worked out the profit from the scheduled work for the next two weeks and resolved that there is more than enough profit in this work and more in the next two weeks. I decided to replace the last section completely. I immediately felt great relief! I could think differently from panic and fear so slowing down made all the difference. My stomach was immediately more relaxed.
After a while the man of the house, a prominent dentist, came out to say hello. Between sips of her coffee she complimented me on a job well done. I drew his attention to the area that concerned me. Even after I pointed it out, he said he couldn’t really see the scar. I encouraged him to look at it from another angle. “Ah, I feel good,” she said. For a brief moment I thought I could just leave it as it was. I couldn’t. I need to have a clear conscience. Even though the stain was only about 4 square feet of a project containing thousands of square feet, I knew it was the imperfection that caught the eye. I wanted to clean and clear leaving an impeccable project. This entire scene unfolds in a matter of minutes. The decision I made represents a milestone in my consciousness and my career.
In those brief moments I also moved from fear-based thinking to thinking about possibilities and looking at responsibility differently. I didn’t think I had all the responsibilities then and I still don’t. However the experience was an eye opener. The conclusion I came to about the driveway was the realization that I needed to respond to my own standards, not anyone else’s. Although I didn’t like the feeling when I thought it was a disaster and I was going to lose a lot of money what bothered me more was having a job I wasn’t happy with.
I took a moment to breathe. I used to think about the task I set and what the profit would be. Breathing and reasoning I reassured myself that the funds would be available to do the job properly, still pay all my bills and leave a profit. The biggest consideration was that being true to my standards. I was always committed to high quality work.
I needed those lessons to create a commitment to excellence that has since paid dividends. There were additional universal laws that came into force. Knowing that I had more than enough money describes the Law of Abundance. The Law of Prosperity describes knowing more money is coming. As soon as I made decisions that supported my goals I felt more grounded and whole. My body immediately relaxed. I felt great because I got rid of the fear! Fear is usually an unproductive use of imagination. I was able to be present, breathe and instantly feel better after making the right decision. The truth and value of that decision in terms of business has come back to me many times as architects and owners of that work have referred work to me over the years. It was the beginning of being more accountable to myself than to others. I was developing an attitude of sacred service to my higher self. I was living my ideal life.
That lesson, early on in my decorative concrete business, set me a high bar in terms of providing the best product possible and treating the customer the way I want to be treated. This is the meaning of the golden rule. I have learned to always take the high road and money will always come back. Money is temporary and transitory. It comes and goes. Having more money than I need today does not mean that I am less or more spiritual today than I was yesterday. Money represents energy. Money is power. Money is a tool to use and so we recognize our value. The money spent to replace the end of the driveway was insignificant compared to the amount of work I had over the years. Furthermore it reinforced the principle of being true to oneself and not compromising one’s values.
The principle of doing one’s best sets up an attracting field greater than we can consciously picture. Honesty is attractive. Credibility is interesting. Always intending to do our best produces prosperity and abundance. It works anytime, anywhere, for anyone. If we always think we don’t have enough we will only attract lack, until we decide to choose a different response to the stimulus. Thinking that I am worthless and unworthy makes it very difficult to attract more money (or energy) to me because I am sending a plea to the universe to create the conditions in my life that allow me to change my thinking, to make another choice. About my attitude to money and my self-worth.
I sometimes wonder about the odds of that rain shower and how it came at the right time for me to formulate and solidify a life-guiding principle that is truly responsible—what it means to be responsible to yourself.
