Never Trust a Programmer

Programming is a bit of a mystery to people. This breeds a lot of mistrust in an organization. In general, when you don’t understand what it takes to make something, anything seems plausible. You might think that a house can be built in a matter of weeks if you don’t go through this process. Indeed they could probably finish building at that point, but not as a sustainable business. If you watch a house being built and track the progress, you can physically see the foundation being poured, the framing of the structure, and more. It’s easy to understand because you see it physically. Writing code for a computer application or a web site is not so obvious

The code is invisible to all but the programmer. It’s like magic happening behind the scenes. Any team needs to trust a programmer about what can and cannot be done. The best course of action, assumptions, and progress updates are all subject to the programmer’s opinion. There are plenty of Type A personalities who have problems with this, but it goes deeper.

The first problem arises when a client decides what they want and when they need it. Sales people want to sell. Telling the client they have unrealistic expectations does not close the sale. And holy shit, that’s a recipe for disaster. I’ve seen account service estimates cut in half and shift money to accommodate their sales and their commissions. At the end of the day it seems like programmers are floundering. They do this because it’s easy to blame the programmers.

They don’t teach office politics in schools. They should, but that’s a different story all together. A programmer has to focus calmly on doing mental gymnastics to produce clean working code. It is hard and takes all your strength. No time to run around to see who threw you under the bus. Game account service plays have consequences.

At a previous agency I worked at, I saw a 7 figure project go down in flames. Who caused the problem? Was it the group of industry leading programmers who worked 70 plus hour weeks to accommodate the client’s arbitrary schedule or was it the account services people who agreed to everything the client asked.

I don’t want to say that programmers never cause problems. If you’ve ever seen the TV show Seconds From Disaster, catastrophic problems arise from a mix of people not doing their job. But, I’ve seen programmers do their thing. Not sure what everyone else was doing.

So what did the agency think? They fired every one of those programmers. All account services, however, still work there. After that depressing death march, no one wanted to be there.

The road to programmers’ hell is paved with the word yes. To police their own world they must be aware of everything possible. Being analytical, they usually put a lot of effort into a guess. From what I’ve seen, it’s usually more effort than most because they’re good at thinking in multiple scenarios. Unfortunately, I have seen good assumptions ignored or challenged. The more realistic they are, the more it is verified from a reason.

It’s hard to go back to a client with a realistic set of expectations. This makes it more difficult to stop. You run the risk of having someone else agree to do the work (who will fail). But the programmer’s job is no less difficult. In fact, they are a group of people who are capable of understanding it all. They know code and they know business problems. They may not be good at handling clients, but they certainly understand what’s going on.

Trust your programmers. They are not only engineers and craftsmen but also businessmen. They will know from experience what happens in client relationships when someone makes a promise that someone can’t keep.
