How To Write Serial Fiction As a Blog

Creative writing can be more fun and exciting when published in a serial blog format. Each chapter is broken down into very small chunks, allowing the author to move at a more leisurely pace, keeping the reader intrigued and coming back for more.

About a year ago today, I began writing “Full Time Lara,” a work of fiction about the adventures of a woman traveling across the country. I spent about six months imagining the plot, the many adventures he would have, developing the characters and how many words each chapter would be.

Then I started writing.

I registered a blog on Blogger, and wrote my first chapter. Six months later, I’ve written over 50 chapters, slowly built a small following, and find myself always eager to write more. It’s just fun.

Here are some tips I compiled…

Adventure seems to make the best serials. You have a main character who goes into one situation, gets out, and then falls into another. It just goes on and on. Each situation brings new characters and each situation brings special qualities to your main character. If you look at television serials, book serials, they all have the same format.

Your readers will want a main character who is consistent in his thoughts and actions. Therefore, before you start writing, imagine every fine detail about your main character. It may help to write a dossier on this person, perhaps in MS Word, or a text editor. Each chapter you write must be true to this person’s behavior, fears, weaknesses, strengths, and joys. You must develop this person’s history, what they experienced in their past and what people influenced them.

Before launching your blog, first write twenty to fifty chapters of the series. This will help you iron out issues and illustrate any problems you may experience while writing. I actually wrote about thirty chapters in MS Word, and after reading it, it helped me rethink my main character, break the chapters into smaller chunks, and create a comfortable writing pace.

Be absolutely consistent with posting frequency. If you’re going to publish a new chapter every day, make sure you do it every day. If your readers notice that you publish new chapters irregularly, they will forget to check your blog.

Many of your chapters post date. That is, write several chapters ahead of time and schedule them for publication at a later date. I usually have between ten and twenty chapters written ahead of time, each scheduled to be published two days apart. That is my posting frequency. This gives me a rolling window of about a month of chapters so I can fine tune and even rewrite if necessary. This allows me to take a break from writing without interrupting my readers.

I try to keep each chapter between 500 and 1,000 words. Other serial blogs go shorter, between 300 and 500 words. But after writing several chapters I found it comfortable in the 500-1,000 word range.

Choose a blog template with a very simple, clean design You may want to choose a template with a larger font, or how you know if you increase the font size. Avoid templates with loud, distracting colors and graphics. You want to draw readers’ attention to your story.

Change the labels and titles so that your blog doesn’t look like a blog For example, where my blog listed “Blog Archives”, I changed it to read “Chapters”. Where the blog pagination reads “Next Post”, I’ve changed it to “Next Chapter”. I also removed the date of the post so it wouldn’t show, and removed my name from every post.

The blog title, including my name “Full Time Lara, by Lara Whalen”, makes it look like a book.
