Psychological & Philosophical Reflections About Life & Humanity Based on Glimpses From the Bible
Interpretation of the Bible through the Centuries
There have been various interpretations and commentaries on the Bible over the centuries. Among the best known is the 11th-century Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki (known as Rashi, 1040 – 1105) – a French rabbi of the Middle Ages, considered the greatest scholar of all time to interpret the Old Testament. Another well-regarded interpretation of the Old Testament is from a much later date – the 19th century – by Moshe David Cassuto, an Italian rabbi and scholar (1883 – 1951).
Many such explanations are meant primarily to those who devote themselves to reading and learning the Bible, and are otherwise too complex for the layperson to understand.
Bible stories told in simple language
Also, there are many books that tell the stories of the Bible in a more “simple, readable” language. Many such books, for adults as well as children, strive to be faithful to Scripture, written in simple, understandable language, intended for the reader(s) to grasp and understand the main point(s) of the story. (I am not mentioning any examples of such stories here so as not to “advertise” any of them).
Yet, Mordechai Rimor, Ph.D., a psychologist, a philosopher, a college teacher, and the author of many academic and literary works, has found a unique way to bring the stories of the Bible to our attention. (Mordechai Rimor, Ph.D.: Book Diversity: Glimpses of the Bible, Space Independent Publishing, 2012, 590 pages).
The uniqueness of Dr. Rimor’s “Book Variations”.
“Book of Variations”, unique in form and style, consisting of short stories – one page or less. Each story is based on a verse taken from the Old or New Testament. More than 500 stories in “Book Variations” by Dr. Remore allowed his imagination to take him beyond “dry” interpretations of verse and into more poetic, interesting, compact story-lines. In doing so he not only brings forth a unique approach (different from many others who try to interpret the Bible literally), but also involves us, the readers, in imagining the picture he paints before our eyes.
What’s unique and refreshing about Dr. Rimor’s “book variety” is that he doesn’t try explanation Bible stories, or he doesn’t try Rewrite Or their craft in a simple language. Rather, he takes a passage that catches his attention and, based on this single passage, he creates a short, concise fictional story, using his imaginative powers.
Dr. Rimor thus gives us – the readers – the freedom and “permission” to use our own imaginations, psychological and philosophical understandings – just as he does! – Related to Bible stories in our own wayThus connecting our own life-experiences and knowledge with the biblical story.
Many literary as well as religious scholars have long agreed that the Bible covers all possible “plans” from love and death to betrayal and war; From faith and devotion, from sorrow and happiness. Dr. Rimor’s book takes a note of such a well-known argument and uses his fruitful imagination to bring a new, present-life perspective to many Bible verses.
As such, Rimor’s “variety of books” points to the Bible’s educational value, “allowing” and encouraging us to open our eyes and imaginations to the Bible’s stories—each from our own perceptions and life-experiences.
What better way to “engage” with these stories than on a personal level?
