Word Counter Tools – Why Count Words and Characters?
When I first started writing content for the web, I didn’t think much of the Word Counter tool. However, after registering on several web 2.0 sites, I realized that this would be an important part of my online writing strategy. Unfortunately, I’ve never been a fast enough writer to compose directly on a Web 2.0 site – by the time I’ve collected and organized my thoughts, my browser crashes and I lose what I wrote on the form.
Obviously the solution to this problem is to compose online content in advance. This not only solves the browser time-out problem – but also allows you to choose keywords more carefully when writing. This can make a big difference in how well content is optimized for search engines and web directories. Regardless of the type of editing tool you prefer (see word counter resources below), it’s helpful to have a rough idea of the word count and character count guidelines that most Web 2.0 sites ask you to follow.
Article submission web site – recommended word and character count
Original Story – To ensure that the submitted content provides some value to readers, most article submission sites recommend a minimum 250 word count for the original story. While some sites allow a maximum count of 5000 words, most content publishers write between 300 and 500 words.
Title and Summary – In addition to your original story, most article submission sites ask for a title and summary of your work. You can check the web site itself for specific guidelines, but as a general rule, your target number for a title should be around 50-100 characters (not words). For summaries, you’ll find most web sites recommend 100-200 characters.
Social bookmarking web sites – recommended word and character count
Body Description or Summary – This should be a brief description of the article you are reviewing. Most sites limit this copy to about 500 characters. However, a well-written summary can often only be 200-300 characters.
Titles – As with article submission sites, the titles you provide on a social bookmarking site are usually limited to 100 characters.
Word counter and character counter tools
You’ll find a variety of online word count tools on the web, but not all tools allow you to save your work for publication at a later date. You may also consider whether you prefer a tool that counts words and characters as you type, rather than clicking a “count” button to see the total at any given time. In some cases a simple word processing program, such as MS Word, will do the trick to let you count characters and keep a saved copy of your work.
