Why the Rich Man Was Condemned to Death, and Lazarus Went to Heaven

I decided to bring this story into the focus, because it has a close link to my discussion on giving, the rich man failed to understand the audacity of giving, and in the end was punished eternally for committing the sin of indifference. Let us now look at the Bible Story (Luke 16: 19-31)

There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day; and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores. And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table; moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.

But Abraham said, son, remember that thou in thy lifetime received thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now, he is comforted, and thou are tormented. And beside all these, between us and you, there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot, neither can they pass to us that would come from thence.

Then he said, I pray thee, therefore father that you would send him to my father’s house: for I have five brothers that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham said unto him, they have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, if they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead’

This parable is a sincere reflection on life in the world and the great beyond. Specifically, it focuses on four Biblical figures, namely Lazarus, the rich man, Abraham and author of life-God. The indifference shown in the life of the rich man, and his attitudes to Lazarus was unimaginable. Theologically, Abraham in this story represented God, the rich man represented the Jewish community that feasted sumptuously on God’s favors, and Lazarus represents the outcasts from the throne of God’s favors. The outcasts in this instance are those that thirsted and hungered for righteousness in their existential lives.

Back to our discourse, the greatness of a man lies not in his material acquisition, but on the degree of compassion and love he can show to the destitute. In the first human family, Cain murdered Abel, when confronted he sounded more logical, ‘am I my brother’s keeper?’ though God didn’t answer this question directly, but the answer was in the affirmative.

This parable described Lazarus as a beggar, a man living a pitiful life. He was addressed as a ‘poor man’ here; the emphasis is that he was among the ‘poorest of the poor’. Certainly, Lazarus was crippled since he was dumped and abandoned at the rich man’s gate. Lastly, Lazarus is described as ‘hungry’ to the extent that he desires to eat even the little food that drops from the rich man’s table. In fact, calling Lazarus a beggar is just an understatement. The name ‘beggar’ is symbolic. Of all the parables of Jesus, this is the only one that gives character, a name. Lazarus’ help arrived only after his death.

The unnamed rich man, who later became a beggar in the story enjoyed all the pleasures and luxuries of life. He is regarded as ‘dives’ by some theological analysts. The word ‘Dives’ means in Latin ‘rich’. He didn’t just have enough to eat and drink, but he feasted sumptuously every day. He had not only clothes to wear, but he wore fine linen. At his death, his burial most certainly was fit for an emperor, a general, and a state burial.

And like an earthly king, he thought his wealth was enough to buy him happiness in the afterlife. Unfortunately and unhappily for him, this man became a beggar in the afterlife. He was not punished because he was rich, the parable didn’t tell us he got his money through crooked means, but because he allowed a poor man to die of extreme hunger and poverty in the midst of over-abundance. He misunderstood the importance of giving, and took God for granted.

In the great torment, he still has learnt nothing. He thought he could persuade Lazarus to serve him, to cool his tongue. No doubt, he remembered Lazarus, and he calls him by name. Abraham had to remind him that Lazarus cannot and in fact should not run an errand for him. But amazingly, the rich man came up with another idea of making a deal- he begged Abraham to send Lazarus to his five brothers, to inform them of his fate. But Abraham declined this offer, reminding him that they should listen to Moses and the prophets.

Exegetically speaking, this is the most amazing stories in the Bible, presenting to us that the sufferings of the poor and the less privileged will never go beyond this world. The goodness is that they will enjoy eternal bliss freed from illnesses after their earthly sojourn. Even in torment, the rich man was unrepentant. Shockingly, he was not asking to come to heaven, instead he was asking that Lazarus should be sent to hell. Imagine!

Heaven is being with the beatific vision; it is all about love, justice, chastity, the praises of God, and celebration of the heavenly liturgy. Surely, he didn’t like hell, but he didn’t show any interest in coming to heaven, in spite of his hatred of hell.

The moral lesson is very clear; to neglect the afflictions of the poor is a damnable offense, all of us have someone sitting by our gates, someone on the street begging for arms, there are many opportunities to express our love to the needy and poor; inviting them in our lives, putting foods on their tables before even asking them who they are. Doing these works and deeds of mercy will attract the glory of God.

We need to rededicate ourselves to giving. If you meet someone you are in a position to help, and you refused to do that, it is a confessional sin- you need to do act of contrition to God. If you meet a deprived, underprivileged beggar on the street or a homeless living in a slum, probably who had not eaten for a while, and you chose to move the other way, you are blocking the blessings from above to you.

While speaking to Christians in conferences, I have always tell them that the only way to bring the gospel of Jesus to others is through the act of giving and charity- you are missing something if you are not aware of this. The easiest way to maintain a blessing and to keep it flowing is by being a giver. The reason why so many people climb up and fall back afterwards is because they have not truly mastered the art of giving. God expects His followers to be true givers; giving food, clothing, shelter etc. He cares deeply about them.

Charity or love is the soul and life of every religion. A life without an element of charity in it is vain and empty. It is in true giving that we recognize the voice of God. Giving is the best way to reach out. Donate today to charity, and your future is secured!
