How to Stop Imposter Syndrome in Her Tracks and Be More UP Yourself

We all have experienced this at some point in our lives. Feeling like we’re not good enough, like we’ve been found out or that we’re out of our depth.

Damn you imposter syndrome. He can definitely hit hard, especially for us ladies. It’s so common that I’ve included a question to ask in my Cards for Uniqueness pack

“When have you felt or acted like a fraud?”

I find it interesting to hear people’s reactions to the question, especially if they draw the card during our podcast interview. Whatever their background or story they can always remember a moment when they felt it most poignantly.

The truth is it can happen to anyone at any time regardless of our experience, status, position or title. This can happen professionally and even socially. You know the feeling – that inner knot, that questioning mind, that diminishes our worth, Power and confidence And once it starts it can be a slippery slope to go down.

So we want to identify him, call him out, and stop him in his tracks when he tries to make a grab. Here are 3 ways to stop imposter syndrome in its tracks and boost yourself up:

“I’m not doing it unless I can do it perfectly.”

Stop being a perfectionist princess, she’s one of imposter syndrome’s best friends. This thinking is extremely damaging to your self-esteem, aka being UP yourself. I know what you’re thinking, but isn’t it important to do a good job? Of course it is but setting too high goals and standards for yourself will definitely make you feel inadequate and feel like a fraud when you fail to reach the goals. You set yourself up for failure and then you beat yourself up for not measuring up!

Suggestion: Princess stop trying to control everything. When you miss your ridiculously self-imposed mark on something, you don’t blame yourself “not cutting” Task for you. No one can be perfect and must do perfect work 100 percent of the time.

If you find yourself constantly believing that you could have done better, start owning and celebrating your accomplishments and accepting your mistakes as you progress, seeing them as a natural part of the process. The truth is, there will never be a “perfect time” and your work will never be a perfect 10. The sooner you accept it and be more optimistic, the better off you will be.

“I was lucky.”

So you think you’ve got lady luck on your side right? All the time? seriously

Woman yourself up more. Have you worked hard to get where you are right? If you keep putting your successes and achievements down to luck, your cheater may start feeding you BS as you find out and you won’t be able to continue your success. Luck is when chance and preparation meet and I guess you are doing a lot of preparation which requires aptitude and persistence. Sure lady luck can strike us every once in a while but you have to remember and acknowledge what you have done to contribute to your own success. Go ahead!

“Oh it was nothing really.”

Imposter syndrome is worse when it prevents you from seeing your own talents. Especially here in Australia where the tall poppy syndrome is rampant people are so afraid to show themselves up that they end up putting themselves down and diminishing their efforts. The problem is that the good old cheat gets stronger every time you do it. It strengthens your neural pathways and its power over you. If you constantly hear yourself saying, “Oh, it was nothing. I’m sure anyone could have done it.” or “It was no big deal, really.” Then you will understand that you are suffering from tall poppy disease. When it comes to improving yourself – focus on doing your best and when you do and someone compliments you just say so “Thanks Ken.” loud applause

Go in and UP!

Isn’t it time you stopped playing small and let your inner cheater win. You’ve come too far to start trusting yourself and worrying about what your little inner voice is saying. A decision to be more UP yourself. Decide to support yourself because you deserve it.
